What began as a joyous wedding celebration in Uttar Pradesh's Handia town near Prayagraj ended on an unexpected note after the bride refused to marry the groom upon discovering that he was bald. The wedding procession had arrived amid music and celebrations, the Dwarchar ceremony had been completed, and preparations were underway for the Jaimala when the dispute erupted.
The wedding procession had come from a village in Jaunpur on Saturday night, officials said. Hours before Jaimala, when the garlands would have been exchanged, the bride learned that her groom was bald. She backed out, following which the argument broke out between the families.
As the dispute escalated, the girl's side informed the police. Police arrived at the scene and summoned both parties to the police station. A panchayat was held there for several hours, but no agreement was sought.
After repeated failed attempts by relatives and elders to change her mind, the bride was strong on her choice to stand out and declined the wedding. After that, both sides decided to end the marriage alliance, and the groom went back with the wedding procession.
Station House Officer (SHO), Handia police station, Anoop Saroj said that the girl refused to marry as she came to know the groom was bald. He said both families decided to end the alliance by mutual consent.
Notably, this is not the first such incident in the region. Similar cases of wedding processions returning without the bride have recently been reported from the Mauaima and Bahria areas.
