Uttarakhand: The intermittent rain in Uttarakhand for the last four days has disrupted life in the mountains. The rivers and streams have taken a furious form. In view of this, the District Magistrate in Uttarkashi has banned Kanwar pilgrims and trekkers from going to Gomukh.
36 Kanwar pilgrims were stranded for 24 hours after the temporary wooden bridge on the river in Gomukh area was washed away. They were rescued safely by the SDRF and Forest Department team on Friday evening. However, two Delhi residents who were washed away in the flood waters of the river near Chidbasa on Thursday are yet to be traced.
Yamunotri, Gangotri Highways Blocked For Several Hours
On Saturday also, the Yamunotri and Gangotri highways remained closed due to debris and was later made operational for traffic.
On Friday, a landslide near Barasu Band in Uttarkashi damaged the fiber cable. Due to this, communication services were disrupted for four hours in about 250 villages including the district headquarters.
On Friday, the Gangotri National Highway was also blocked for about five hours near Dharasu Band. The Yamunotri National Highway was also closed for seven hours about one km from Dharas Band and four hours near Dabarkot due to debris falling from the hill.
As the monsoon arrives in the entire country, the rain over the past few days in Uttarakhand has disrupted daily life and triggered numerous landslides in the hills that blocked roads, including the national highway leading to Badrinath. Besides, a five-year-old child drowned in a rainwater-filled pit in Dehradun and a teenager in Haridwar.
According to news agency PTI, quoting police, the five-year-old child, who had gone out to play in the Prem Nagar area of Dehradun, was found dead in a water-filled pit late on Thursday. In Haridwar, a teenage boy who had gone to bathe in a rain-fed rivulet in the Navoday Nagar area was swept away by strong currents. His body is yet to be found, the police said. His two friends, who had also gone into the stream, were rescued by the locals.
