Days after suffering critical injuries in a skiing accident in the United States, Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal’s eldest son, Agnivesh Agarwal, passed away on Wednesday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. In a post on X, the billionaire industrialist described the loss as “the darkest day” of his life, saying the tragedy has left his family emotionally shattered.
“Today is the darkest day of my life. My beloved son, Agnivesh, left us far too soon. He was just 49 years old, healthy, full of life, and dreams. Following a skiing accident in the US, he was recovering well in Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans, and a sudden cardiac arrest snatched our son away from us,” Agarwal wrote.
He further said ‘no words’ can describe the pain that he is going through as a parent who has to bid goodbye to his own child. He added that a father should never have to outlive his son. This loss has devastated the family beyond words and in ways they can only fathom.
Anil Agarwal said his son Agnivesh was known as a sportsman, a musician, and a leader. “To me, he was not just my son. He was my friend. My pride. My world. Kiran and I are broken. And yet, in our grief, we remind ourselves that the thousands of young people who work across Vedanta are also our children,” the Vedanta chairman added.
Who Was Agnivesh Agarwal?
Agnivesh Agarwal, aged 49, was the eldest son of billionaire industrialist Anil Agarwal. An alumnus of Mayo College, Ajmer, he later founded Fujairah Gold. He also served as chairman of Hindustan Zinc and was a board member of Vedanta Group company Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL).
He slipped into a coma after sustaining severe injuries in a skiing accident and was subsequently admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. While his condition initially showed signs of improvement, it worsened suddenly, and he suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite medical intervention, he passed away on Wednesday.
