CP Radhakrishnan Becomes India's Next VP By Defeating Sudershan Reddy. NDA Candidate CP Radhakrishnan secured 452 first preference votes in his favour to become India's 15th Vice President.

The voting process for Vice President elections has concluded and counting is underway. The elction has recorded a turn out of 98 per cent  with 13 MPs abstaining from exercising theri franchise.

The voting for Vice President elections concluded around 5 on Tuesday evening leading to begining of vote counting from 6 pm. The race between NDA and INDIA bloc nominees will conclude soon as the results will be announced today itself. 

The voting process for the Vice President elections concluded on Tuesday evening, with the counting of votes underway. The Key Opposition party, Congress, claimed that all opposition MPs appeared to cast their votes in a rare show of unity. 

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the Opposition had demonstrated unity, with all 315 of its MPs casting their votes.

The counting of votes for the Vice Presidential election of India got underway at 6 PM. The decision on the fate of NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan and INDIA bloc candidate Sudershen Reddy is expected tonight.

The voting process to elect the Vice President of India has concluded, and the results are expected soon.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called the opposition's claim routine. He expressed confidence that his side would win, saying that opposition celebrates even in defeat. "There are always claims of the opposition; this is not new. There is a unique speciality in our opposition that even after losing, they celebrate... This time also, we will win, and they will be happy," he said.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday took a jibe at the Opposition's Vice Presidential candidate Justice B Sudershan Reddy for meeting RJD chief and fodder scam convict Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Giriraj Singh slammed Sudershan Reddy for talking about "morality" while meeting with a person convicted in a scam.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh says, "We are confident of winning the elections. Opposition's Vice Presidential candidate, B. Sudershan Reddy, who is a former judge, met RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, convicted in the fodder scam, and he is talking about morality."

After casting his vote in the 15th Vice Presidential election on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to assess the situation caused by floods and landslides in the two states. In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, "Leaving for Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to review the situation in the wake of floods and landslides. The Government of India stands shoulder to shoulder with those affected in this tragic hour."

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav says, "...Numbers are fine but this voting is done on the basis of one's conscience. The entire country knows that the BJP is a use-and-throw party. The same thing happened with the Vice President, who is missing...The numbers will be in our favour."

Justice B. Sudershan Reddy (Retd.) is a former Supreme Court judge, who hails from Andhra Pradesh. Born on July 8, 1946 in Andhra Pradesh, Sudershan has done BA and LLB and enrolled as Advocate at Hyderabad with the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh on December 27, 1971. Justice Reddy was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on May 2, 1995. Served as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, he elevated as Supreme Court Judge in 2007.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominated Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan. He is a seasoned BJP leader belonging to a key OBC caste from Tamil Nadu, which will undergo election next year. Radhakrishnan has an RSS background. Radhakrishnan (67) is two-time former member of Lok Sabha from Coimbatore. In Radhakrishnan, the BJP has trusted a leader with a proven organisational and ideological commitment, a far cry from its choice of his predecessor, Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The stage is set for the crucial Vice President election necessitated by the sudden exit of Jagdeep Dhankhar. There is a direct contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party-led ruling alliance's candidate, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan and INDIA bloc's ex-Supreme Court judge, Justice B Sudershan Reddy.

-> The electoral college for the vice presidential election comprises a total of 788 members, 245 from the Rajya Sabha and 543 from the Lok Sabha.

-> The 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha are also eligible to vote in the election. The present strength of the electoral college is 781, as six seats are vacant in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha.

The opposition has nominated Congress leaders Naseer Hussain and Manickam Tagore, besides TMC leader Shatabdi Roy, as the polling agents for their joint candidate Reddy. Shaktisinh Gohil and Manickam Tagore have been nominated as his counting agents. Among the leaders who attended the meeting in Samvidhan Sadan were Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi, NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar, DMK leader T R Baalu and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Two other unaligned parties, BJD and BRS, have announced that they will abstain from voting. So has the SAD, a former BJP ally. At the meeting of opposition MPs, the members were told not to let their vote go to waste in the September 9 vice presidential poll and were informed about the procedure of casting votes. The last vice-presidential polls saw some votes declared invalid. Opposition MPs were told to only mark preference '1' in their ballot and not mark anyone as their second preference on the ballot paper. The second preference votes are counted only in case of a tie between the two candidates.

- The election for the second-highest constitutional position in the country was necessitated due to the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21.

- Though the numbers are stacked in favour of the ruling NDA, which claims the support of 427 votes out of the total 781 valid votes, the rival camp is leaving no stone unturned to make it a close contest. The majority mark is 391.

- The Opposition, which has 315 MPs, has asked the members to cast their vote for the "spirit of India" by hearing the voice of their conscience in what they have described as an "ideological battle".

- In the meeting of NDA MPs, Prime Minister Modi asked MPs to ensure that they vote correctly, noting that it does not send out a good message when parliamentarians make a mistake in polling.

- A mock polling session was held to ensure that MPs know the correct way of casting their ballot in an election held on a single transferable vote. There are 39 MPs who are unaligned to the two main blocks. Among them, the YSR Congress has announced its support to Radhakrishnan and AIMIM's sole member Asaduddin Owaisi has pledged his vote to Reddy.

The prime minister would be among the first ones to vote in the vice presidential election, sources said, adding that he has to leave for a survey of flood-affected areas in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh soon thereafter. Separately, leaders of the INDIA bloc parties like Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, TMC, RJD, JMM, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (SP), CPI and CPI-M met in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan (old parliament building) and were briefed about the election process.

Members of Parliament are not bound by party whips to vote in the vice presidential election, which takes place under a secret ballot system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the NDA MPs at a meeting in Parliament's Library building.

"Participated in the NDA meeting in Delhi, attended by MPs across the NDA family. The candidature of Thiru CP Radhakrishnan has generated immense enthusiasm all across. People believe that he will be an excellent Vice President, who will enrich the office with his wisdom and insights," Modi later said on X.

Both the ruling NDA and Opposition INDIA bloc held separate meetings on Monday in the Parliament complex in a show of strength, where they sensitised their respective MPs about the election process and also held mock polls while exhorting their members to vote correctly. Polling for the vice president election, in which members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are eligible to vote, would begin at 10 AM in the new Parliament building and continue till 5 PM. Counting of votes will begin at 6 PM, and the result will be out later in the evening. 

All votes carry equal value, and voting is conducted through a secret ballot, as per established parliamentary procedure. The majority mark needed to win is 391 votes.

The Vice President's post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, citing health concerns, on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. His unexpected resignation created a leadership gap in the Upper House, making today's election especially significant.

The electoral college for the Vice Presidential election comprises 781 members, including 542 elected members of the Lok Sabha and 239 members of the Rajya Sabha (233 elected and 12 nominated, with six vacancies across both Houses).
