Tamil Nadu Election Results: The results for Tamil Nadu Assembly election were announced on May 4. Vijay’s TVK emerged victorious, bringing to an end the dominance of the two major Dravidian parties - DMK and AIADMK. Despite its historic debut, TVK fell short of the majority mark, securing 108 seats in the 234-member House which is 10 fewer than the 118 needed to form the government. The outcome has now set the stage for intense political negotiations and speculation over the next move.

Hung Assembly In Tamil Nadu

A hung assembly is declared if none of the parties or alliances cross the majority mark. As per the rules, the governor invites the single largest party to form its government in case of a hung assembly. The single largest party can explore the possibility of an alliance with smaller parties or independents. After TVK approached Congress, the latter has decided to extend its support to form the government in Tamil Nadu. As per reports, Congress has demanded at least two ministerial positions and has asked Vijay to have no association with the NDA. A formal letter of support is soon likely to be submitted to the governor, paving the way for the formation of the new government.

What Happens In A Hung Assembly?

In case of hung assembly, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will ask the leader of the coalition with maximum seats to form the government by proving its majority. The coalition comes to power if the majority is proven in the floor test. On the other hand, the Governor can simply put forth a coalition that can demonstrate majority support.

What Is A Floor Test?

In a floor test, MLAs in the House cast their votes to show whether the government still commands majority support. If the numbers fall short, the Chief Minister is required to step down, after which the Governor can invite another party or coalition that appears capable of forming the government.

If no political formation succeeds in establishing a majority, the state can be placed under President’s Rule as per Article 356 of the Constitution. After this, fresh elections are held to elect a new government.
