The weather conditions across India are changing rapidly with the advance of the southwest monsoon. While many regions are enjoying much-needed relief from the heat with rainfall, some parts of the country continue to grapple with heatwave conditions. Heavy rainfall is anticipated across many states on June 7 as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Heavy rainfall in Southern and Northeastern states
The IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall of 7-20cm in Kerala, Karnataka and parts of Tamil Nadu. Extensive rain is also expected to occur across Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura starting today.

Alerts for heavy rain have also been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of West Bengal and Sikkim are also likely to experience significant rain.
The monsoon has also advanced over additional parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It has also made its presence felt over parts of Telangana, the remaining areas of Tamil Nadu, the south Bay of Bengal and the northeastern states. Active monsoon conditions are expected over Goa, starting from June 7, with moderate to heavy showers predicted for parts of many districts. Hailstorms may also be observed over parts of Maharashtra.
Rain and thunderstorms across central and western India
Across western and central India, Konkan, Goa and parts of Maharashtra may witness heavy rainfall, while Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and parts of Madhya Pradesh could see thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
Varied weather across the northwestern states
Northwestern states are expected to see mixed weather conditions. While light rain/drizzle may be observed in J-K, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and the Delhi-NCR region, western Rajasthan has been put on high alert for thunderstorms with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph expected.
Despite the advancing monsoon, heatwave conditions may still prevail over coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Odisha. Nighttime may also be uncomfortably hot and humid over parts of Odisha.
Advisory for fishermen
The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid going out to sea. Rough weather, strong winds and high waves are expected at various locations. Fishermen have been discouraged from fishing in the Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area, near the Maldives, off the coast of Sri Lanka and parts of south Tamil Nadu and the Bay of Bengal. Similar advice has been given to fishermen regarding the Arabian Sea, including the coast of Maharashtra (South), Goa, Kerala and Karnataka.
