West Bengal Swearing-In Highlights: Suvendu Adhikari & 5 Ministers Take Oath As First-Ever BJP Govt Forms In Bengal

West Bengal New CM Oath Ceremony LIVE Updates: In a major political shift in West Bengal, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari sworned in as the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister after defeating Mamata Banerjee in her Bhabanipur stronghold during the Assembly elections 2026. Along with Adhikari, senior BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik have also taken oath as cabinet ministers on Saturday.
The day coincides with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday officially announced Suvendu Adhikari as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. In the polls, the BJP secured 207 seats, while the TMC won 80 seats.
The BJP wrote a historic victory in the just-held Assembly elections, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule and dealing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee one of the biggest setbacks of her political career. On Tuesday (May 5, 2026), Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee said she would not resign as Chief Minister, alleging that the verdict was the result of a “conspiracy” rather than the people’s mandate.
Since the election results were announced on Monday (May 4, 2026), instances of post-poll violence erupted across Bengal. On Wednesday (May 6, 2026), BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Madhyamgram area in the state's North 24 Parganas district.
