The father of six-year-old Avyaan Surya, who drowned in a rainwater-filled pit inside Greater Noida's Kaladham Society, has questioned the alleged negligence of the authorities, asking, "What mistake did we make that led to the loss of my child?" Police have arrested a contractor in connection with the incident, while further legal proceedings are underway.
Avyaan, the son of Kendriya Vidyalaya Vice Principal Siwan Yadav, died after falling into a nearly 15-foot-deep pit dug for boring work near Kaladham Society in the Knowledge Park police station area.
Speaking to ANI after the tragedy, the child's father said, "Regarding the child, I would like to say that he is no longer with us. I arrived home yesterday evening. I was just sitting there when people living in the colony informed me that something like this had happened. He was immediately pulled out of a huge pit. The authorities were carrying out work there... I immediately took him to Yatharth Hospital. Doctors tried hard, and after that, the child was declared dead. But it's sad that despite living in a good society, we had to suffer because of the negligence of the authorities... What mistake did we make that led to the loss of my child?"
Contractor Arrested
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Ravi Shankar Nim said an FIR was registered after receiving a complaint from the victim's family, and one contractor involved in the work has been arrested and sent to jail.
"Yesterday, on 25/7/2026, in the evening, information was received that a child had died in a pit that was being dug for water supply within the boundary of Kaladham Society. Upon receiving this information, Knowledge Park police and fire brigade vehicles immediately reached the spot. The child had already been rescued by his family and taken to Yatharth Hospital, where he was declared dead. An immediate case was registered based on the family's complaint, and one contractor involved in the incident has been arrested and sent to jail. Other legal proceedings are ongoing," the DCP said.
According to police, Avyaan was playing with other children near Kaladham Society when he accidentally fell into the rainwater-filled pit. Residents rushed to the spot after hearing the cries of the other children, pulled him out after considerable effort and took him to Yatharth Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Dangerous Pit Dug Several Days Ago
The victim's family alleged that the pit had been dug several days earlier for borewell work and was left uncovered without any barricades or warning signs. They have accused the Greater Noida Authority of negligence and demanded strict action against those responsible.

Police conducted an inquest and sent the body for post-mortem. Knowledge Park SHO Vinod Kumar said the investigation is underway and further action will be taken based on the findings.
Residents also drew parallels with the death of Yuvraj Mehta, who died after falling into an open pit in Sector 150 earlier this year. They alleged that despite assurances of improved safety measures after that incident, hazardous open pits continue to pose a serious risk, and demanded immediate barricading of all excavation sites and accountability for lapses.
