Lawyer Abhinav Chandrachud on Friday filed a petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, seeking the quashing of multiple FIRs lodged against him over obscene remarks in a recent episode of the Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent. The plea also requests an urgent hearing, citing Allahbadia’s summons by the Assam Police.

A bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar acknowledged the request and assured that the matter would be listed for hearing within two to three days. Despite Chandrachud emphasising the urgency, CJI Khanna stated that a date had already been assigned and declined to allow an oral mention.

Legal charges against Allahbadia include Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, which criminalizes acts insulting a woman's modesty through words, gestures, or other means. He is also accused of infringing upon a woman's privacy under relevant laws.

Who Is Abhinav Chandrachud?

Abhinav Chandrachud, a distinguished lawyer, is the son of former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. He practices at the Bombay High Court and holds an impressive academic background. He completed his Doctor of the Science of Law (JSD) and Master of the Science of Law (JSM) at Stanford Law School, where he was a Franklin Family Scholar. He also pursued an LLM at Harvard Law School as a Dana Scholar and graduated from the Government Law College, Mumbai, in 2008.

Beyond his legal practice, Abhinav has worked as an associate attorney at Gibson and the global law firm Dunn & Crutcher. He is also a noted author, having written Republic of Rhetoric: Free Speech and the Constitution of India (2017) and Supreme Whispers: Conversations with Judges of the Supreme Court of India 1980-1989 (2018). His opinion pieces have appeared in several leading newspapers.

In a farewell speech, former CJI DY Chandrachud shared an anecdote about his sons Abhinav and Chintan, both practicing lawyers. He recalled requesting them to argue cases in the Supreme Court so that he could see them more often, to which they declined, citing concerns over maintaining professional integrity while their father was a judge.

''They told me, ‘Dad, we shall do it after you demit office. Why should we bring disrepute to your name and ours by practicing in SC when you are a judge?’ I am truly blessed to have children who have that ethos,'' Chandrachud remarked.
