In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Sushrut Singh, Additional Director - Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital Noida explained about liver cirrhosis, its symptoms and causes.
Liver Cirrhosis
Liver cirrhosis is a serious condition where the liver gradually gets damaged and scarred, affecting its ability to function properly. It often develops slowly over many years due to long-term liver injury. While many people may not notice early signs, the condition can silently progress and lead to life-threatening complications if not addressed in time.
Common Symptoms Of Liver Cirrhosis
In its early stages, cirrhosis may have no noticeable symptoms. As the disease advances, people may start experiencing-
•Fatigue and weakness: Feeling tired easily, even after little exertion
•Loss of appetite and weight loss
•Nausea and occasional vomiting
•Swelling in legs (edema) or abdomen (ascites)
•Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
•Itchy skin and easy bruising
•Dark-colored urine or pale stool
•Confusion or forgetfulness (in advanced stages due to toxins accumulating in the brain)
These symptoms occur because the liver is no longer able to filter toxins, produce essential proteins, or manage blood flow effectively.
What Causes Liver Cirrhosis?
Cirrhosis can result from a variety of liver diseases and conditions. The most common causes include-
•Chronic alcohol consumption- Long-term excessive drinking is one of the leading causes
•Hepatitis B or C infections- These viral infections cause persistent liver inflammation
•Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)- Often seen in people who are obese or diabetic
•Autoimmune liver diseases- Where the immune system attacks healthy liver cells
•Genetic conditions- Like Wilson’s disease or hemochromatosis
•Long-term exposure to toxins or certain medications
Why Early Detection Matters
Cirrhosis once advanced is irreversible but early diagnosis can even reverse or slow its progression and improve quality of life. If you or a loved one experiences any of these symptoms, especially if there’s a history of liver disease, alcohol use or hepatitis, consult a doctor. Lifestyle changes, medication and regular monitoring can help manage the condition effectively.
