Pregnancy is one of the most significant experiences in life, but the decision between normal vaginal delivery and C-section can be confusing and stressful. Normal delivery, also known as vaginal delivery, utilises the body's natural process, where contractions help to open the cervix and move the baby through the birth canal, taking anywhere from 8 to 18 hours for first-time mothers. Normal delivery helps the mother to heal faster, reduces the risk of infection, and provides benefits such as the transfer of beneficial bacteria to the baby, which enhances the baby's immunity. However, it requires the mother to have physical stamina and may require episiotomies if there are complications, such as prolonged labour or fetal distress.

On the other hand, a Caesarean section is a surgical procedure that requires an incision on the abdomen and uterus, which may be required in cases of high-risk pregnancies, such as breech presentation, placenta previa, or maternal health conditions such as preeclampsia. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Hrishikesh Pai - World-Class IVF & Gynaecology Leader (India), debunks myths about normal delivery and C-section.

Myth 1: A Normal Delivery Is Always Better Than A C-Section

Vaginal birth is a natural process and is ideal in many uncomplicated pregnancies. However, it is not always the safest option. Dr Hrishikesh Pai states, “Situations such as fetal distress, placenta previa, breech position, multiple pregnancies, or maternal health issues may require a C-section.” A cesarean is not a failure it is often a lifesaving procedure for both mother and baby.

Myth 2: C-Section Means You Didn’t “Really” Give Birth

This belief can emotionally hurt new mothers. Giving birth is about bringing a baby safely into the world, not about the route of delivery. Whether a baby is born vaginally or surgically, the strength, love, and care of a mother remain the same. Every safe birth is a successful birth.

Myth 3: C-Sections Are Always Risky And Lead To Long-Term Problems

Like any surgery, a C-section has risks, but with modern techniques, experienced doctors, and proper post-operative care, it is generally very safe. Dr Hrishikesh Pai states, “ Most women recover well and go on to have healthy future pregnancies. Likewise, vaginal births can also involve complications such as tears or pelvic floor issues.” There is no completely “risk-free” optiononly what is safest for each case.

Myth 4: You Can Always Choose The Mode Of Delivery In Advance

While birth plans are helpful, labour is unpredictable. Sometimes medical conditions arise suddenly, and the delivery method must change to protect the mother or baby. Trusting your doctor and staying flexible is key to a positive outcome.

Childbirth should not be surrounded by fear, guilt, or comparison. What matters most is the wellbeing of both mother and child—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Instead of debating “normal versus C-section,” we must focus on informed choices, compassionate care, and safe outcomes. Every birth that protects life and dignity is a birth to be proud of.
