Zakir Hussain Death Cause: The tabla maestro Zakir Hussain died at the age of 73 of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease at a hospital in San Francisco, his family said in a statement. The four-time Grammy award winner, Zakir Hussain was admitted to the hospital for the past two weeks and was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after his condition deteriorated.

His family said in its statement, "He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy cherished by countless music lovers around the globe, with an influence that will resonate for generations to come."

What Is Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis?

Dr. Harpalsinh Dabhi, Senior pulmonologist and critical care Physician, HCG Hospitals, Bhavnagar explained that Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic and progressive lung disease marked by scarring (fibrosis) of lung tissue, which gradually makes breathing more difficult. While the exact cause is unknown, it is believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and age-related factors.

The condition primarily affects adults over the age of 50, with the risk increasing as people age. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is like living with lungs that slowly lose their ability to expand and contract, turning every breath into a challenge.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Causes And Symptoms

Dr Padma Sundaram, Consultant-Pulmonologist and Sleep Specialist, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bengaluru explained that symptoms of IPF typically include persistent dry cough, shortness of breath (especially with exertion), fatigue and unintentional weight loss. As the disease progresses, patients may experience more severe breathing difficulties and decreased exercise tolerance.

Treatment, Diagnosis And Prevention

The diagnosis of IPF involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, pulmonary function tests, high-resolution CT scans, and, in some cases, a lung biopsy. Biopsy is typically reserved for atypical symptoms. Oxygen therapy may be provided to patients experiencing respiratory failure.

There is currently no cure for IPF, but treatments aim to manage symptoms and slow disease progression. Prognosis is much better with the use of antifibrotic medications, such as pirfenidone and nintedanib, which are commonly prescribed to slow the scarring process. In advanced cases, when oxygen therapy no longer adequately supports breathing, lung transplantation may be considered.

The prognosis for IPF varies, but the disease typically worsens over time, with many patients experiencing a decline in lung function within 3-5 years of diagnosis. Early detection, appropriate management, and supportive care can improve quality of life.
