Maharashtra Civic Body Poll Results: The results of the 29 municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra have once again proven that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to be the Mahachanakya (master strategist) of Maharashtra politics.
He has not only transformed the BJP, which once played a subordinate role (younger brother) to the Shiv Sena in the state, into the party with the largest popular base across Maharashtra, but he has also snatched the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) stronghold from Uddhav Thackeray, who betrayed him in the 2019 assembly elections by forming a government with the Congress and NCP.

Fadnavis's Strategy Pays Off
Whenever there is political turmoil in Maharashtra, one face emerges with full force – that of Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis. Once the youngest mayor of Nagpur, Fadnavis is not only the BJP's 'crisis manager' but has also established himself as the biggest player in state politics.
Recent events and the 2024 assembly election results have proven that the equation of power in Maharashtra is incomplete without him. Fadnavis's political journey began as a disciplined worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). After studying law at Nagpur University and learning the intricacies of business management in Berlin, he surprised everyone by becoming the mayor of Nagpur at the young age of 27.
Fadnavis's Political Journey
After becoming an MLA for the first time in 1999, he never looked back. His intellectual prowess and grasp of legislative intricacies quickly made him a trusted confidant of the top leadership in Delhi. When he became the first BJP Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 2014, no one thought that a Brahmin leader would make such deep inroads into Maratha-dominated politics.
After the 2019 elections, the power dynamics changed, and the BJP had to sit in the Opposition. During that time, his slogan 'Mi Punha Yein' (I will come back again) became a subject of ridicule for his opponents, but Fadnavis made it his mission. During the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, he played the role of a 'shadow chief minister' and constantly kept the government under pressure by raising issues of corruption. Fadnavis's far-sighted strategy is considered to be behind the major splits in the Shiv Sena in 2022 and the NCP in 2023, which brought the BJP back to the brink of power.
How Fadnavis Outsmarted Rivals
In December 2024, Fadnavis made history by taking the oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the third time. The resounding victory of the Mahayuti alliance (BJP, Shiv Sena-Shinde, and NCP-Ajit Pawar) is largely attributed to Fadnavis's electoral strategy.
He not only forged strong alliances with partner parties but also neutralised the opposition's Maratha reservation and other caste-based strategies by making populist schemes like the 'Ladki Bahin Yojana' and infrastructure development key election issues.
Currently, Fadnavis is moving forward with the resolve to make Maharashtra a 'trillion-dollar economy'. Fadnavis's politics is not limited to merely holding power; he is a leader who has instilled in the BJP cadre the belief that they are 'invincible'. The way he bounced back after electoral defeats, humiliation, and being out of power has earned him the title of 'Maharashtra's new Chanakya'. Today, he is not just a Chief Minister, but has emerged as the most trusted architect of Maharashtra's future.
