The exit polls done by Axis My India, the JVC, and Sakal have predicted a sweep for the BJP-led Mahayuti Alliance in the BMC Election in Mumbai. Axis My India exit poll shows that Mahayuti Alliance is projected to win 131-151 seats while the JVC exit poll shows that the alliance would secure 138 seats. Sakal, meanwhile, has predicted that BJP led Mahayuti will emerge victorious in 119 seats.

The Sakal exit poll projections showed the BJP-Shiv Sena allaince getting 119 seats, while Uddhav's Shiv Sena, NCP (SP) and MNS getting 75 seats. The Congress is projected to get 20 seats.

Former corporator and BJP candidate in the Nagpur civic polls Bhushan Shingne was seriously injured after being attacked by a group of people on the election-eve, police said on Thursday. Shingne, the BJP candidate from Ward No. 11 of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), was assaulted around Wednesday midnight in the Gorewada area, hours before voting began at 7.30am on Thursday, they said.

 Voting in polls to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra ended at 5:30pm on Thursday with State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare saying the turnout so far is in the 46-50 per cent range. Waghmare told PTI Videos this is higher than the figures for the 2017 civic polls, adding that he was satisfied with the turnout.

As per SEC data, the voter turnout was 41.13 per cent till 3.30 pm across the state.

The Maharashtra Civic Body Polls 2026 concluded on January 15, with 34.8 million voters deciding 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations, including high-stakes contests in Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The elections saw major political realignments, including the reunion of the Thackeray cousins and Ajit Pawar’s alliance with Sharad Pawar’s NCP challenging traditional strongholds.

Dhule in Maharashtra witnessed civic poll violence over the past 48 hours, including two groups scuffling and damaging an EVM and a mob attacking the residence of a Shiv Sena leader, police said. The residence of Shiv Sena's Dhule district chief Manoj More at Krushi colony in Deopur was attacked by a mob of 20 persons on the issue of withdrawal of candidature on Wednesday evening.

A group barged into More's house, pelted stones and damaged vehicles, allegedly over a dispute between him and BJP's Vilas Shinde on withdrawing candidature, the official added. Cases have been registered against supporters of both More and Shinde under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rioting and unlawful assembly, the official said.

On Thursday morning, two groups had a scuffle in a school in ward number 18 in Dhule, following which some persons entered the polling booth and damaged an EVM, the police official said. The poll process was stalled for over an hour due to this.

A voter turnout of 39.64 per cent was registered in Nashik Municipal Corporation polls till 3:30pm on Thursday, officials said. Nashik is among the 29 civic bodies where polls are being held. Votes will be counted on Friday.
The voter turnout till 3:30pm was 46.18 per cent in Malegaon Municipal Corporation in the district, officials added.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday claimed irregularities in the Maharashtra civic polls, terming it an attempt to “murder” democracy, and urged voters to dislodge the “brutal, fraud, corrupt and dictatorial regime” of the BJP. Uddhav and his cousin Raj Thackeray, who heads the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, targeted the State Election Commission (SEC) over a range of issues, besides claiming that the ink used on voters' fingers could easily be erased.

Addressing a news conference, Uddhav demanded the suspension of State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare, and alleged collusion between the poll body and the government. Voting was underway on Thursday for elections to 29 municipal corporations in the state, including the Mumbai civic body.

Speaking to reporters, Uddhav also dubbed the SEC an anti-constitutional body. “Never ever such things (alleged irregularities) have happened before,” Uddhav charged. He said the ink used by the poll commission could be erased using hand sanitisers.

As many as 41.08 per cent of voters cast their ballots in the first eight hours of polling for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday, officials said.

The average voter turnout stood at 41.08 per cent at 3.30 pm, said a BMC spokesperson.

Polling began across 227 wards in the city at 7.30 am amid tight security, and will continue till 5.30 pm.

BMC said an earlier letter on handling postal ballots for the 2025–26 civic elections was inadvertently issued and has been withdrawn. Postal ballot boxes will now be taken out along with EVMs on counting day, January 16, as per State Election Commission orders.

Ink applied to fingers with marker pens after casting vote in the ongoing municipal corporation elections can be removed easily and it can lead to bogus voting, Maharashtra minister Sanjay Shirsat claimed here on Thursday.

"It is true that the ink of marker pen is getting removed easily. There is a possibility of bogus voting at some places due to this. Polling agents and officials should pay strict attention to this," he said.

Several Mumbaikars on Thursday complained of difficulties in exercising their franchise for the civic polls underway, including change in polling booths and name location on physical electoral rolls. Even election staff and party functionaries, on the other side of the poll process, found common ground with the segment of disgruntled voters, with many claiming the list given to them had poorly printed photographs, making verification tiresome.

Many voters said their polling booths of years had been changed or merged without adequate prior information, while some were seen running around from one helpdesk to another trying to find their names on the rolls. Several polls stations across the country's financial capital were witness to such commotion, especially during the morning hours.

Amid allegations of electoral malpractice in the Maharashtra local body polls, the State Election Commission (SEC) clarified that voters attempting to erase ink from their fingers to cast a second vote will face legal action. The SEC stated that safeguards are in place to ensure that once a vote is recorded, erasing the ink does not allow repeat voting.

Film producer Boney Kapoor showcased his inked finger after casting his vote in the BMC elections, praising the authorities for providing a smooth voting experience. He urged more people to participate, saying he salutes everyone who votes and expressed hope that voter turnout would increase as the day progresses.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde cast his vote at a polling station in Thane during the Maharashtra local body elections and said that people were showing great enthusiasm by coming out in large numbers to vote. He appealed to citizens to participate for a brighter future, noting that over 25 per cent voting had already taken place in Mumbai within an hour, reflecting the public’s desire for change and development. Shinde said his alliance is contesting on the agenda of development and dismissed opposition concerns over EVMs, stating that the Election Commission has been using them since 2012, while also stressing that the polls must remain fully transparent and fair.

MNS president Raj Thackeray on Thursday cast his vote in the Mumbai civic polls and accused the State Election Commission of bias, claiming the entire administration was being misused by the government to secure victory in the polls. He targeted the State Election Commission over the use of the Printing Auxiliary Display Unit (PADU) in the civic polls.

"The SEC did not even bother to give any clarification on the use of PADU and extended the canvassing time to allow distribution of money (by ruling parties)," the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief alleged. He asked his party workers to stay alert against any malpractices by rival parties in the polls.

He further claimed that the ink mark on the finger after casting a vote can be easily wiped off with sanitiser. "They (the government) don't want the Opposition parties. The entire administration is being run by the government (to win the polls). This is not the sign of a healthy democracy. There is a limit to misuse of power," Thackeray said.

Officials reported that an average of 17.73% of voters had cast their ballots in the first four hours of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections on Thursday. Polling, which began at 7:30 AM and will continue until 5:30 PM, is taking place under tight security across Mumbai’s 227 electoral wards.

Replying to MNS chief Raj Thackeray ink statment Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said, "I have also been marked with a marker, is it erasing? The Election Commission should look into this issue and use something else, they can use oil paint if they want, the elections should be impartial. But creating a ruckus on everything and raising questions is very wrong."

Raj criticised the system, claiming the government and administration are doing everything to win elections by any means, and called on the Election Commission to provide full information and clarity on the voting process.

He said, "The ink that was used before is being replaced with a new pen, and there are complaints about this new pen. If you use a hand sanitizer, the ink disappears. Now, the only option left is to apply the ink, go outside, wipe it off, and then go back inside and vote again. A new rule has been implemented for campaigning. This shows that the government can do anything to stay in power. We don't call this an election when someone comes to power through such fraudulent means. I appeal to the people, the Shiv Sena workers, and the Matoshree Sena workers to be vigilant about all these things. A person was caught casting a vote twice."

Mumbai Police have tightened security across the city ahead of today’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls, deploying thousands of personnel, installing barricades and carrying out vehicle checks, while South Mumbai Returning Officer Krishna Jadhav said special arrangements have been made to assist senior citizens and encourage voter participation, including the introduction of “pink booths” staffed entirely by women, decorated in pink, with women officials wearing pink sarees.

RSS Chief Dr Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday showed his inked finger after casting his vote in the Maharashtra civic body elections and urged citizens to participate actively in the democratic process, saying that voting is essential to elect the government and is the foremost duty of every citizen, adding that people must vote with a balanced view and the welfare of society in mind, which is why he chose to stand in line early and vote first thing in the day.
