The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has further delayed the opening of Metro Line 9, which was earlier slated for a phased launch from Christmas last year. Only a partial section of the corridor will now be opened to the public on Republic Day.
According to MMRDA officials, as quoted by Hindustan Times, only the 4.4-km stretch between Dahisar and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium is currently ready for operations. The remaining sections of Line 9 will require a little longer and are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Why Has The Opening Of Line 9 Been Delayed?
Following an inspection of Metro Line 9, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) flagged several issues that needed to be addressed by the MMRDA. Officials have stated that all the observations have since been resolved, and the final safety clearance is expected shortly. At present, CMRS certification has been granted only for the 4.4-km stretch proposed for opening.
On the same day, authorities also plan to resume air-conditioned services on the Harbour Line between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Panvel.
How Will Metro Line 9 Benefit Commuters?
Once fully operational, Metro Line 9 will enable seamless travel from Mira-Bhayander to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Terminal 2, significantly improving connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters in the northern suburbs.
