Mumbai News: Borivali railway station has taken a major step towards modernising Mumbai’s suburban rail network with the commissioning of the city’s largest Electronic Interlocking (EI) system. The upgrade is expected to improve safety, punctuality and overall efficiency on one of the busiest sections of the suburban railway.
For thousands of daily commuters, the new system promises smoother train operations, especially during peak hours when traffic density is at its highest.
Faster And Safer Train Operations
The newly commissioned EI system replaces the old relay-based signalling mechanism with the advanced Siemens Westrace MK-II technology. This change allows train movements to be controlled with higher accuracy and reliability.

The Lokmat report cited Railway officials as stating that the modern system reduces the chances of signal failures and human errors. As a result, delays are expected to come down, helping trains run closer to their scheduled timings. The system is designed to manage heavy traffic efficiently, which is crucial for a station like Borivali that handles lakhs of passengers every day.
Mumbai’s Largest EI Network At One Station
With this upgrade, Borivali has emerged as a key technological hub in Mumbai’s suburban rail system. The station now operates the largest EI setup in the city, managing 381 operational routes and 90 track points across seven running lines.
A state-of-the-art signalling control room has also been set up at the station. The facility features dual 65-inch 8K display screens that show real-time train movements. This allows operators to take quicker and more informed decisions during disruptions, emergencies or heavy rush hours.
Western Railway Highlights Safety Gains
Western Railway officials said the new system has significantly strengthened operational safety and reliability. The Mid-Day report cited a spokesperson as stating that the EI setup can seamlessly manage hundreds of routes, signals and track circuits with high precision.
The project has been widely seen as a critical upgrade for Mumbai’s suburban network, where even small signalling issues can lead to large-scale delays.
