Mumbai woke up to a rainy new year start as heavy rainfall lashed parts of the Maharashtra capital on Thursday morning.
The rainfall began shortly after 6 AM and was of short span with its intensity reduced after 6:15 AM. Some parts of the city witnessed intense showers while others saw drizzles, making the weather pleasant. The rainfall in the city was unexpected, with users flooding social media with posts on rain on the first day of 2026.
Social media erupted after the unexpected weather. A user named Rahul Blive wrote, "Now who would have thought that it's going to rain on the very first day of 2026."
Another user, Muffi Kapadia, wrote, "Mumbai Rains welcoming 2026 with unseasonal showers. Beautiful weather nevertheless." The unseasonal rains made the weather pleasant in the city, many residents said.
According to news agency ANI, light showers were received by Mumbai's Walkeshwar and Lower Parel areas, which brought down pollution levels.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai was 112 at 9 AM, according to the data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
This was 8 notches less than the 24-hour average AQI recorded till 4 PM on December 31.
