Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP Chief Ajit Pawar has issued a strong warning against any attempt to intimidate the Muslim community, stating that such actions will have serious consequences. "If anyone tries to intimidate our Muslim brothers and sisters, they will not be spared," Pawar declared, speaking at an Iftar party in Mumbai on Friday.
His remarks come in the backdrop of the Nagpur violence on March 17, which erupted over rumors that a "chadar" with holy inscriptions was burnt during protests led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb.
"Anyone who tries to create conflict between two groups, takes law and order into their hands—whoever they may be—will not be spared, they will not be forgiven," Pawar asserted. Reassuring the Muslim community, he added, "I want to assure you that your brother Ajit Pawar is with you."
Pawar also emphasized the importance of unity and harmony, citing the teachings of great leaders. "Many great leaders like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, BR Ambedkar and Jyotiba Phule have shown the path of social progress by embracing all religions and castes. India is a symbol of unity in diversity. We recently celebrated Holi, and now Gudi Padwa and Eid are approaching. These festivals teach us to live together, and our real strength lies in unity."
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded to Pawar's remarks, stating that patriotic individuals, regardless of caste or religion, would not be troubled. However, he made it clear that those guilty of inciting violence would not be spared.
"I do not know what Ajit Pawar said, but a patriotic person of any caste or religion will not face any trouble. However, whoever is guilty will not be spared," Fadnavis stated.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari also weighed in, emphasizing the BJP's commitment to non-discrimination. "The BJP does not discriminate based on religion. We adhere to the philosophy of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas', ensuring equal justice and progress for all," Tiwari said.
The clashes in Nagpur on March 17 erupted following demands for the removal of Aurangzeb's grave. Tensions escalated when rumours circulated that a holy book had been burned during the protest. This led to stone-pelting, arson, and violent clashes between two groups. However, the situation has now returned to normal, and the curfew imposed in several areas has been lifted.
