Mumbai BMC Mayor: Elections for the next Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are likely to take place in the first week of February. While the official schedule is yet to be announced, reports indicate the process is expected to take place early next month. This comes after the BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena secured a decisive win in the recent civic polls.
BMC Mayor Election: Why The Process Is Delayed?
While other municipal corporations in Maharashtra have already announced their election schedules for the posts, Mumbai continues to await an official announcement. According to CNN News-18 sources, the delay is attributed to the ongoing group registration process with the Konkan Divisional Commissioner, involving the ruling BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
The mayoral election schedule is likely to be announced only after the completion of group registrations at the Konkan Divisional Commissioner’s office. It will be followed by formal registration at the municipal secretariat in Mumbai. According to the procedure, the election for Mayor must be conducted within seven days once the group registration is completed, News18 reported.
Once the group registration process is completed, the Municipal Commissioner and the Municipal Secretary will meet to finalise the election schedule. Following this meeting, the civic administration will issue an official notification, inviting nominations for the mayoral posts.
Candidates will be given a three-day window to submit their applications. The nomination papers will then be accepted over the next two days, after which the election process will move to the voting phase and the declaration of results, News18 report added.
Following the recent lottery process, the mayoral post has been reserved for a woman from the general category. Political activity surrounding the mayoral race has intensified, with speculation growing over the potential candidates from the ruling alliance.
