The pursuit of a doctoral degree is usually viewed through the lens of academia. It is a rigorous and demanding journey aimed at generating new knowledge and contributing to the specific field of study. However, a scholarly pursuit is much more, and at the core, it is a profound expedition into the realms of self-discovery and personal growth.
A PhD is a journey of intellectual discovery, personal transformation, and resilience—an expedition marked by hope and uncertainty, driven by the aspiration to contribute something novel to the world. Beyond acquiring expertise, the PhD process fosters intellectual awakening, equipping individuals with the ability to challenge assumptions, cultivate critical thinking, and develop interdisciplinary insights.
These acquired competencies extend far beyond academia, shaping individuals for corporate, entrepreneurial, and societal success. The essence of this journey lies in its ability to instil adaptability, perseverance, and an insatiable thirst for learning—traits that prove invaluable in research and every facet of life.
The Intellectual Awakening
PhD scholars begin their journey with curiosity, sometimes self-driven, sometimes instilled by their mentors and academic environment. Unlike traditional degrees focusing on knowledge consumption, a PhD is centred on knowledge creation and expansion. It demands comprehension and the ability to critique, refine, and extend existing frameworks. This transition from passive learner to active knowledge creator is the cornerstone of the PhD experience.
As scholars navigate this intellectual odyssey, they develop independent perspectives, analytical depth, and the ability to synthesize complex ideas. Over time, they learn to push the boundaries of their field and reshape their own cognitive processes—a transformation that fuels their intellectual independence. This ethos of research excellence is deeply embedded in MICA’s Fellow Programme in Management (FPM).
Having recently been granted PhD equivalence by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the program has consistently nurtured scholars who have made significant contributions to knowledge creation. For instance, recent FPM alumni have conducted pioneering research on how emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) intersect with consumer psychology, particularly in the dynamic landscape of emerging markets like India.
Intellectual Skepticism, Resilience, and Fluidity
A hallmark of PhD training is the cultivation of intellectual scepticism, the ability to question established paradigms and refine them through rigorous inquiry. This scepticism is not a sign of doubt but a catalyst for deeper exploration. The process of deconstructing existing knowledge and reconstructing it into novel insights is both challenging and rewarding. While the initial stages of research may seem daunting, the eventual gratification of unveiling new knowledge makes the struggle worthwhile. Resilience is another trait defining successful PhD scholars. Research is unpredictable and often has dead ends, revisions, and setbacks. Yet, this very struggle builds endurance, adaptability, and the patience to pursue long-term intellectual goals.
As one MICA FPM alumnus aptly said, "The PhD journey taught me to be resilient, forward-thinking, and driven to explore what has not been studied well. Moreover, intellectual fluidity, the ability to adapt to new ideas, methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches—is an essential trait cultivated during a PhD. Rigidity is a limitation in today’s fast-evolving world, where knowledge domains continuously intersect. At MICA FPM, scholars are encouraged to embrace interdisciplinary perspectives, ensuring their research remains relevant, impactful, and adaptable to changing industry and societal needs. This academic freedom fosters original thought and practical relevance, allowing scholars to address contemporary issues with lasting implications."
A Lasting Impact
A true intellectual journey transcends academia and leaves an indelible impact on society. At MICA FPM, scholars are motivated to go beyond the obvious, tackling pressing global challenges through their research. By focusing on real-world implications, they contribute to theoretical advancements and policy, industry, and community welfare. For instance, one MICA FPM alumnus explored sustainability communication and its impact on eco-conscious consumer choices.
The findings have significant implications for policymakers, brand managers, and marketers striving to promote sustainable consumption patterns. This kind of research exemplifies how academic inquiry can be deeply connected to societal progress, reinforcing that PhD scholars are not just researchers but architects of meaningful change. Earning a PhD is more than just an academic milestone—it is a transformative journey of intellectual and personal evolution.
It begins with learning to challenge the known and culminates in discovering the unknown. Throughout this journey, scholars acquire analytical rigour, resilience, and the ability to navigate complexity—skills that extend far beyond the dissertation. Mentors and supervisors play a pivotal role in this process, guiding scholars through intellectual crossroads and supporting them through moments of doubt.
Yet, the essence of this journey remains deeply personal—it is, at its core, an odyssey of self-discovery. At MICA, we take pride in fostering this journey, celebrating our FPM graduates' academic achievements, research excellence, and societal contributions. We invite individuals with insatiable curiosity and a desire to reshape the frontiers of knowledge to embark on this extraordinary journey—one that goes beyond earning a degree to discovering one’s intellectual purpose and lifelong impact.
