Griha Pravesh is the first ceremony performed after you buy a new house or make major renovation changes. In Vastu Shastra, the ceremony is believed to activate the new energy, balance the five elements and also invoke blessings of the divine.

Whether you’re planning a grand puja or a simple family ritual, follow these 5 rules for a prosperous start.

Rule 1: Choose An Auspicious 'Shubh Muhurat'

Never enter your new home on a randomly chosen date. A Griha Pravesh must always be performed during an auspicious muhurat determined by the Hindu calendar or Panchang.

Favourable months generally fall during Uttarayan, when the sun moves north. Avoid moving into your new home during Dakshinayan or periods like Shraaddh/Pitru Paksha.

Pro-Tip: Consult a trusted priest to match the Tithi and Nakshatra with the head of the household’s birth chart.

Rule 2: Complete All Construction Before The Ceremony

A Griha Pravesh is meant for a complete house, not for an incomplete one. Moving into an unfinished home is considered unfavourable in Vastu. Make sure that before and during the ceremony, all doors, windows, paint, electrical fittings, and plumbing are finished.

Rule 3: Decorate And Cleanse The Main Entrance

The main door is the gateway for energy, wealth, and health. Clean the entrance thoroughly, draw a traditional Rangoli at the entrance, and hang a toran made of fresh mango leaves and marigold flowers.

These mango leaves are believed to absorb negative energy, while marigold brings positive energy into the living space.

Rule 4: Break A Coconut And Execute The Right-Foot Entry

The head of the family should break the coconut at the threshold. This act is believed to eliminate obstacles. And when crossing the threshold, always step inside with your right foot first.

Ritual Requirement: Carry an idol of Lord Ganesha, an auspicious Kalash (water pot filled with coins and raw rice), and a lit lamp into the home during the entry to make it more auspicious.

Rule 5: Boil Milk And Spend the Night

A Griha Pravesh isn't finished when the guests leave. Two final are needs to be performed for home's positive aura.

In the newly set up kitchen, boil fresh milk in a new pot until it overflows slightly over the rim. This symbolises an abundance of food, health, and wealth.

Do not lock the house up and sleep elsewhere that night. At least one family member must sleep in the new home on the night of the Griha Pravesh to keep the home’s energy active.
