Step-By-Step Karwa Chauth Rituals For Unmarried Women

The rituals for unmarried women differ from those of married women observing the fast. Here are the few steps that unmarried girls should follow:

1. Pre-Dawn Rituals:

  • Wake up during Brahma Muhurta around 4 am, take a bath and wear clean clothes.
  • Take a Sankalp (vow) with devotion to observe the fast with pure intentions for your future life partner.
  • Then eat the predawn meal. The sargi is prepared by their own mother and includes fruits, nuts, and milk to sustain energy.

2. Daytime Routine:

  • Observe the fast from sunrise until moonrise.
  • Avoid arguments, fights or extreme physical work.
  • Engage in positive thoughts or devotional music.

3. Evening Karwa Chauth Puja:

  • In the evening, wear traditional attire, preferably red, pink, or yellow. Avoid wearing Black or White as they are considered inauspicious.
  • Then, for puja, clean the puja space and place the idol or image of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha on the chowki (platform).
  • Offer flowers, sweets, and akshat (unbroken rice).
  • Listen to or read the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha.

4. Breaking the Fast

  • Unmarried girls don’t have to wait for the moon, nor use a sieve to break the fast.
  • Once the first star appears, take the water in a brass vessel and offer Arghya (water) to the star.
  • Then take the first sip of water and a bite of sweet from your mother's or relative's hands.

Note: If you are engaged, do a video call with your fiancé while breaking the fast.

Essential Do's And Don'ts Unmarried Girls Should Follow

Here are some rules that unmarried girls should follow while observing the Karwa Chauth fast:

What Should Be Done:

  • Unmarried girls observing the fast can keep the fast as a Falahar vrat. They are not required to observe a nirjala vrat.
  • Offer arghaya to the star, not the moon, because it requires Karwa rituals specific to married women.
  • Wear vibrant clothes on this day.

What Should Be Avoided:

  • Do not use a sieve. Looking through a sieve is reserved exclusively for viewing one's husband.
  • Do not use a Karwa made of clay while offering water, as clay pots are exchanged among married women during puja.
  • Do not wear black or white as these are traditionally considered inauspicious during Hindu rituals.

Yes. Modern customs allow engaged girls to look at a star first, offer water, and then view their soon-to-be husband through a video call before taking water.
