The Sudarshan Chakra is one of the most powerful cosmic weapons that Lord Vishnu holds in his upper right hand. It is believed that this chakra helps Lord Vishnu restore balance in the universe, uphold righteousness, and destroy evil forces.
Worshipping this sacred chakra protects from negativity and blesses people with spiritual well-being.
Here are five lesser-known facts about the supreme wheel of preservation that many people don’t know.
1. It Was Made By Lord Vishwakarma Using Solar Dust
According to popular belief, the Sudrakshan Chakra already existed in Vaikuntha (the divine abode of Lord Vishnu). However, spiritual texts like Vishnu Purana and Markandeya Purana tell a legend about its origin.
According to it, Sanjna, the daughter of Lord Vishwakarma, was married to the Sun God. However, because of the Sun's blazing heat and light, she could not go close to him. To help his daughter, Lord Vishwakarma placed the Sun God upon his cosmic lathe and diminished his radiance.
From this harvested solar effulgence, Lord Vishwakarma created three divine objects: the Sudarshan Chakra for Lord Vishnu, the Trishula for Lord Shiva, and the aerial vehicle Pushpaka Vimana.

2. Lord Shiva Had Given It To Lord Vishnu
According to the Kotirudra Samhita of Shiva Purana and the Mahabharata (Anushasana Parva), when Lord Vishnu fought the demons, he needed a powerful weapon to defeat them.
So, Lord Vishnu meditated on Lord Shiva, chanting his thousand names and also gathered thousands of blue-eyed lotuses to please him.
To test his devotion, Lord Shiva secretly disguised the last one. So, to finish his tapasya, Lord Vishnu immediately prepared to pluck out his own lotus-shaped eye to complete the ritual.
Moved by this gesture, Lord Shiva appeared before him, restored his eye, and gifted him the Sudarshan Chakra to fight the demons.
3. Chakra Is A Living, Conscious Entity
The Sudarshan Chakra is not merely metal but possesses distinct divine consciousness. In Vaishnavite theology, particularly within the Vaishnava tradition, Sudarshan Chakra is revered as Chakraperumal or Sudarshana Azhwar.
Iconographically, it is shown as Chakra Purusha, possessing sixteen or thirty-two arms wielding every known divine implement. It has its own cosmic intellect, choices, discernment, and mercy.

4. Sudarshan Chakra Operates On Its Own Will
According to the Ahirbudhnya Samhita, an ancient Pancharatra Agama text, the Chakra possesses ichha-shakti (will power), jnana-shakti (knowledge), and kriya-shakti (action).
Once commanded by Lord Vishnu, the Sudarshana Chakra travels to any space or time to destroy evil and establish dharma. When the task is done, it instantly returns to the index finger of Lord Vishnu.

5. It Created A Solar Illusion To Kill Jayadratha
During the Kurukshetra war on Day 14, Arjuna had taken a vow to kill Jayadratha before sunset because Jayadratha killed his son, Abhimanyu. To protect Jayadratha, the Kaurava army built a virtually impenetrable defence to waste their time.
Seeing Arjuna's distress, Lord Krishna used the Sudarshan Chakra to block the sun, creating an illusion of evening. Believing the sun had set and Arjuna had lost, Jayadratha himself stepped forward and mocked him.
Lord Krishna then withdrew the Chakra, exposing the bluff, and told Arjuna to defeat him.
