Papankusha Ekadashi falls during the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin. This year it will be observed on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The Parana time will be performed on the morning of Friday, October 23.

The term Papankusha comes from two Sanskrit words: ‘Papa’ meaning sins and 'Ankusha' meaning the goad/hook used to control elephants. On this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and observe a fast.

It is believed that this fast removes past karmic sins, guides the soul toward liberation and invites good health and prosperity.

Parana Rules That Devotees Should Follow

Breaking an Ekadashi fast incorrectly diminishes its spiritual merit. So, follow these rules during the Parana window:

  • Never break your fast during Hari Vasara.
  • Break the fast after sunrise on the next day of Ekadashi.
  • Perform Parana during early morning. If for some reason morning hours are missed, complete it during Madhyahna.
  • Fast should be broken with water infused with tulsi leaves accompanied by light satvik food, fruit juice, or rice pudding.
