Lord Shiva took the Kaal Bhairav avatar mainly to crush Brahma’s ego and uphold the truth. According to a legend, Brahma and Vishnu got into a fight over who was more powerful. When the Vedas proclaimed Shiva as the ultimate reality, Brahma started hurling abuses at Shiva from his fifth head.
Shiva got furious at Brahma’s ego and behaviour, and from this anger, Kaal Bhairav was formed. With a single fingernail, Kaal Bhairav sliced off Brahma’s fifth head, which had abused Shiva.
