Cabo Verde’s Brilliance

Few expected Cabo Verde to emerge from their opening two World Cup matches unbeaten, but the tournament debutants continued their remarkable run by frustrating another former world champion.

After earning a goalless draw against Spain, the Blue Sharks stunned Uruguay by taking the lead through Kevin Pina's magnificent long-range free-kick. The midfielder drilled his effort through a gap in the wall and into the bottom corner to score Cabo Verde's first-ever World Cup goal.

Uruguay responded strongly before the break. Maxi Araujo headed home after Rodrigo Bentancur's effort struck the post, before Agustin Canobbio completed the turnaround in stoppage time to give Marcelo Bielsa's side control of the contest.

The South Americans appeared on course for victory, but Cabo Verde refused to back down. A defensive lapse allowed Helio Varela to pounce and slot home the equaliser, sending the travelling supporters into celebration. Cabo Verde continued their brilliant fighting spirit as they did in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa stated, "The decisive factor was that we let our intensity drop, and that shouldn't have happened."

However, Uruguay dominated possession, but a disciplined Cabo Verde defence headed by Pico Lopes and Sidny Lopes Cabral held firm to secure another famous point.

"I had dreamed of this, but I never imagined it would happen this way. Scoring my first goal for the national team on my World Cup debut is incredible. I have no words," said Cabo Verde player Helio Varela.

Cabo Verde vs Uruguay game was among the stories of the tournament so far, with the debutants now drawing both Spain and Uruguay. According to the latest Uruguay national football team vs Cape Verde national football team stats, both teams remain unbeaten after two matches in Group H.
