Belgium's search for a first win at the FIFA World Cup 2026 continued after a frustrating 0-0 draw against a resilient Iran side in Group G.
While the Red Devils dominated possession for long periods at Los Angeles Stadium, inspired goalkeeping from Alireza Beiranvand and a second-half red card for Nathan Ngoy ensured Team Melli walked away with a valuable point.
The result leaves both Belgium and Iran on two points from two matches, with qualification to the knockout stages set to be decided in the final round of fixtures.
Goalkeepers Steal The Show
Belgium welcomed Romelu Lukaku back to the starting XI for the first time since June last year and immediately took control of possession. However, despite their dominance, clear-cut opportunities proved difficult to find against an organised Iranian defence. Iran players were giving their bodies on the line as the Red Devil players kept shooting at the goal.
The Red Devils' best early opening fell to Youri Tielemans, whose powerful effort at the near post was brilliantly pushed away by Beiranvand. Kevin de bruyne was brilliant with his touches on the ball and some classy through balls.
Iran, meanwhile, looked dangerous whenever they counter attacked. Real Madrid star man, Thibaut Courtois was forced into an excellent low save to deny Hossein Kanani after a long throw caused problems inside the Belgian penalty area.
Team Melli thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half through a brilliantly worked free-kick routine. Ehsan Hajisafi slid the ball into the path of Mehdi Taremi, who fired beyond Courtois, but celebrations were cut short after the striker was flagged offside.

Red Card Drama
Iran National football team continued to threaten after the interval and Courtois was once again called into action to keep out a powerful volley from Mehdi Taremi.
At the other end, Beiranvand showcased his brilliance that eventually earned him the Player of the Match title. The experienced shot stopper produced two outstanding low saves to deny Maxim De Cuyper and preserve the deadlock.
Belgium's task became significantly harder after 66 minutes when Nathan Ngoy was shown a straight red card. The defender lost the ball easily, allowing Taremi a clear route towards the goal before bringing him down.
Despite enjoying a numerical advantage for the final stages, Iran could not find a breakthrough as Courtois and the Belgian defence held firm.
Frustration For Belgium, Boast For Iran
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia admitted his side lacked the cutting edge required to turn dominance into goals.
"We lacked efficiency up front. I expected this kind of game, with nearly 70 per cent possession, plenty of crosses and lots of shots. We hit the target, but we didn't test the goalkeeper enough," Garcia said.
"Playing with ten men didn't help either. We've had matches like this before and usually scored at least three goals. That's part of a slow start to a World Cup," he added.
Lukaku reflected his manager's frustrations after another missed opportunity. "We have to analyse what went wrong because we created so many chances without scoring, and that's frustrating. We play with too much emotion in key moments," said Napoli striker.
Iran coach Amir Ghalehnoei was delighted with his side's performance. "I think it was a very exciting game. Both teams deserved to win; both could have taken the three points. I want to extend my sincere thanks to every player, especially Ali Beiranvand," the tactician stated.
