The FIFA World Cup 2026 is heading towards its business end with the France national football team preparing to face Morocco in a blockbuster quarter-final clash. However, the build-up to the contest has been dominated by FIFA's decision to appoint an all-Argentine officiating team for the fixture.
Facundo Tello will take charge of the match, with the entire refereeing panel also consisting of Argentine officials. The appointment has sparked plenty of discussion among fans, especially considering the fierce sporting rivalry between France and Argentina following the dramatic 2022 FIFA World Cup final.
Despite the online debate, France head coach Didier Deschamps made it clear that his team's focus remains solely on Morocco.

Didier Deschamps Shrugs Off Argentine Officials Debate
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Deschamps dismissed concerns surrounding the referee appointment and insisted France have complete faith in FIFA's match officials. "We have to deal with it. I trust the referees. Our opponent is Morocco, not the referee," Deschamps said.
The French boss also appeared to take a subtle swipe at critics of the appointment while praising the standard of officiating seen in the tournament. "Let's hope our officials are as good as Monsieur Letexier was," he stated.
France reserve goalkeeper Robin Risser echoed his manager's views and admitted there has been lingering tension since the 2022 World Cup final, but insisted it should not become the talking point before such a crucial match.
"There's been a certain bitterness for a few years now since the last final, but that's part of the game," Risser said.
"If these referees are there, it's because they're up to the level of the competition," he added.
Morocco Coach Mohamed Ouahbi Also Backs FIFA's Decision
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi also refused to make the referee appointment an issue, stating that experienced officials are exactly what high-pressure knockout matches require.
"Regarding the referees for tomorrow's game, we're talking about a very experienced referee," Ouahbi said during his pre-match press conference.
"That's what we want. We want experienced referees for this type of matches. So we're very calm," he concluded.
Ouahbi also highlighted one characteristic of Facundo Tello's officiating style. He highlighted, "The referee we'll have against France, he's not so quick to give bookings, and that can play an impact, but I would not say anything against the quality of the referees."
France and Morocco will face each other in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final on Thursday, July 10 Friday, 1:30 AM (IST), with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
