The Egypt Football Association has reportedly lodged an official complaint with FIFA following Egypt's controversial 3-2 defeat against Argentina national football team in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.

French referee François Letexier and his officiating team have come under heavy scrutiny, with the Egyptian federation alleging that multiple crucial decisions unfairly went against the Pharaohs during the Round of 16 clash in Atlanta.

Egypt made a dream start to the match and looked on course for one of the biggest upsets of the tournament after racing into a two-goal lead against the defending champions. Despite their impressive performance, Egypt were left furious with several major officiating decisions. Reports Suggest Egypt Has Filed A Complaint

According to a report from Spanish publication Diario AS, Egypt Football Association president Hany Abo Rida has formally submitted a complaint to FIFA against referee François Letexier and the rest of the French officiating team.

The report claims that Egypt has urged FIFA to investigate the officiating, arguing that several controversial decisions significantly affected the outcome of the match.

The federation has also reportedly requested that Letexier and his fellow French match officials should not be appointed for any remaining fixtures at the FIFA World Cup 2026 due to what it believes were decisive officiating mistakes.

Egypt Coach's Strong Reaction

Even before reports of the official complaint emerged, Egypt head coach Hassan had strongly criticised the match officials during his post-match press conference. "We looked better than the reigning champion, better in everything, but the result was influenced by internal factors on the pitch and external factors off it. Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running," he stated.

He further added, "In football, there are sometimes external factors that go beyond the technical aspects. The world champion received support at every level."

The comments have since added further fuel to the controversy surrounding one of the most talked-about matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

What Can Be The Consequences?

If FIFA acknowledges the complaint, it could review the officiating performance from the Argentina-Egypt encounter. Such reviews are common after major international tournaments, particularly when national associations raise concerns over refereeing standards.

However, it is highly unlikely that the match result will be overturned. Instead, FIFA could assess the performance of the officials internally and determine whether any disciplinary action or changes to future referee appointments are necessary.

If Egypt's request is accepted, the French officiating team could potentially be excluded from handling the remaining matches of the tournament, although FIFA has not made any official statement on the matter so far.
