Hockey India has clarified the reasoning behind introducing a new saffron playing kit for the national teams after former India captain and Olympian Viren Rasquinha criticized the move ahead of the Hockey World Cup.

The governing body said the decision was taken primarily by technical considerations raised by players and coaches rather than aesthetics, adding that the colour change followed detailed consultations with the teams.

The controversy erupted after the new jersey was unveiled, replacing India's traditional blue playing kit that has long been associated with the men's and women's national teams.

Rasquinha questioned the decision on social media, saying the team's legacy and identity have always been linked to blue and asking what the logic was behind switching to saffron.

Hockey India’s Decision on Change Of Jersey Colour

Responding to the criticism, Hockey India stated that the decision to change the jersey colour was based on recommendations from the coaching staff, support staff, and players after extensive consultations. The federation explained that the primary reason was technical rather than symbolic.

According to Hockey India, the traditional blue playing kit often blended with the blue synthetic turf that has become the standard surface for international hockey.

This reduced on-field visibility and made it more difficult for players to identify teammates quickly during matches. To improve visual clarity, coaches and players suggested exploring alternative colours.

Why Was Saffron Chosen?

Hockey India revealed that several colour options, including yellow and saffron, were discussed before saffron was finalised. The federation said the choice not only addressed the visibility concerns but also carried national significance, as saffron is one of the three colours of the Indian National Flag, symbolising courage, sacrifice, and national pride.

The governing body also noted that changes to the national team's playing kit are not unprecedented. India previously wore a yellow jersey during the 2014 FIH Hockey World Cup, while the team sported a redesigned sky-blue kit at the 2018 FIH Hockey World Cup, highlighting that uniform colours have evolved over the years based on functional requirements.

What Did Viren Rasquinha Say?

Former India captain Viren Rasquinha strongly opposed the move, arguing that the identity of Indian hockey has always been linked to the iconic blue jersey.

While acknowledging the positive work done by Hockey India in recent years, he questioned the reasoning behind abandoning the traditional colour.

His comments sparked widespread discussion among hockey fans and former players, with opinions divided over whether the new jersey represents a necessary functional change or an unnecessary departure from India's long-standing sporting identity.
