Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu gave India its first gold medal of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a dominant display in the women's 48kg weightlifting event on Sunday.
The 31-year-old lifted a total of 190kg, made up of 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, to comfortably finish on top of the podium.
Mirabai created history by setting a new Commonwealth and Games record in the snatch with her final lift of 85kg. She then matched that performance in the clean and jerk, where her 105kg effort also became a new Games record, taking her overall total to another Games record.

The Indian star did not have the perfect start, missing her opening attempt at 82kg in the snatch. However, she stayed calm, successfully lifted the same weight on her second attempt and then cleared 85kg to break the record.
It was another memorable achievement for Mirabai, who has now won three straight Commonwealth Games gold medals after her victories in 2018 and 2022. She had earlier claimed a silver medal at the 2014 Games, making this her fourth Commonwealth Games medal.
Rishikanta Singh settles for silver after brave fight
Earlier in the day, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh delivered an impressive performance in the men's event but narrowly missed out on the gold medal.
The Indian weightlifter finished with a combined total of 264kg after lifting 121kg in the snatch and 143kg in the clean and jerk. Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan won the gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 273kg, while Kenya's Joshua Mboya claimed bronze with 260kg.
Rishikanta looked in excellent form during the snatch competition. He successfully lifted 116kg and then 119kg before producing a superb final lift of 121kg. The effort not only gave him a personal best but also briefly set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch.
Kasdan, however, matched the 121kg lift soon after, leaving both lifters tied going into the clean and jerk.
Rishikanta made a confident start by clearing 143kg, moving into the overall lead with a total of 264kg. But Kasdan responded strongly, first lifting 145kg and then 149kg to move ahead.
The Indian needed 151kg in his final attempt to regain the lead. He managed to complete the clean but could not finish the jerk, ending his hopes of winning gold.
Kasdan then completed a superb performance by lifting 152kg in his final attempt, setting a new Commonwealth Games record total of 273kg and securing the title.
While Rishikanta had to settle for silver, his personal best and record-equaling effort in the snatch underlined his growing reputation on the international stage. Mirabai's historic gold and Rishikanta's silver ensured a strong start for India in the weightlifting competition.
