Harry Kane's journey to winning the Ballon d'Or 2026 is a story of childhood rejection, loan spells, injury struggles and years of heartbreak before finally reaching the summit of world football.
Once released by Arsenal's academy for not being athletic enough, Kane went on to become Tottenham Hotspur's all-time leading goalscorer, England's record men's scorer and one of the most prolific strikers of his generation.
His success did not come overnight. From fighting for opportunities at lower-league clubs to suffering trophyless seasons at Tottenham, Kane repeatedly had to prove himself.
However, his determination finally paid off as a remarkable 2025–26 campaign, featuring goalscoring records and major trophies, culminated in football's most prestigious individual award.

Arsenal Rejection: The First Setback
Kane began playing for local club Ridgeway Rovers in 1999, aged six, before joining Arsenal's youth academy at eight.
However, his time at the club lasted only one season. Liam Brady, who was in charge of Arsenal's academy, later explained that Kane was considered "a bit chubby" and not athletic enough.
The rejection could have discouraged a young footballer, but Kane continued pursuing his dream. He eventually joined Tottenham Hotspur, where he began building the foundations of his professional career.
Loan Spells: The Road To Tottenham's First Team
After signing his first professional contract with Tottenham in July 2010, Kane had to work his way through several loan spells. He joined Leyton Orient in January 2011, making his senior debut against Rochdale, before spending time at Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City.
His time away from Tottenham was not always easy. Opportunities were limited at certain clubs, while injuries disrupted his progress. However, his seven goals in 22 league appearances for Millwall during the 2011–12 season demonstrated his potential.
Kane returned to Tottenham with valuable experience and eventually earned his breakthrough during the 2014–15 campaign, scoring 21 Premier League goals and winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
Premier League Dominance And Injury Struggles
Kane established himself among England's elite forwards by winning consecutive Premier League Golden Boots in 2015–16 and 2016–17, scoring 25 and 29 league goals respectively.
Despite recurring ankle injuries, he continued delivering exceptional performances. In 2020–21, Kane won his third Golden Boot with 23 goals and also claimed the Playmaker of the Season award after recording 14 assists.
His achievements extended to international football. Kane won the Golden Boot at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and became England's all-time leading men's goalscorer in 2023, surpassing Wayne Rooney.
Tottenham Heartbreak And Bayern Munich Move
In February 2023, Kane overtook Jimmy Greaves to become Tottenham's all-time leading goalscorer. He finished his Spurs career with 280 goals in 435 competitive appearances.
However, major silverware remained elusive. Tottenham lost the 2019 Champions League final, while Kane's outstanding individual performances repeatedly failed to translate into trophies.
Seeking a fresh challenge, he joined Bayern Munich in August 2023. Kane scored 36 Bundesliga goals in his debut season and won the European Golden Shoe, but Bayern finished the campaign without a major trophy.
The breakthrough finally arrived in 2024–25 when Bayern won the Bundesliga, giving Kane the first major senior team title of his career.
2025–26: The Season That Changed Everything
Kane elevated his performances further in 2025–26, scoring 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich across competitions and helping the club win the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
His impact extended to England, where he scored six goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the national team finished third.
Combining his club and international performances, Kane scored 73 goals in 65 appearances during the season. His extraordinary consistency, goalscoring records and contribution to Bayern's trophy-winning campaign strengthened his case for the Ballon d'Or.
