Apple iOS Update: Apple is taking a rare step toward making life easier for users who want to leave the iPhone ecosystem. With the upcoming iOS 26.3 update, the company is set to introduce a new feature called Transfer to Android, designed to simplify how users move their data from an iPhone to an Android phone.
The feature will allow iPhone users to wirelessly transfer key data such as contacts, messages, notes and photos to an Android device. The process works over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and follows a side-by-side setup approach, similar to how Apple’s own AirDrop works within its ecosystem. This marks a notable shift for Apple, which has traditionally made switching platforms a more complicated experience.

The move comes alongside Google’s own preparations. Android Canary 2512 recently introduced the Android-side support needed for the new switching system. With both Apple and Google aligning their software, switching between iOS and Android is set to become far less painful than before.
Until iOS 26.3 rolls out publicly, third-party and official apps remain the main option. iPhone users moving to Android can rely on the Android Switch app, while Android users heading to iOS can use Apple’s Move to iOS app from the Play Store. These apps already support transfers of contacts, photos, messages and other essentials, but the new built-in system aims to reduce reliance on separate downloads.
Apple has already included Transfer to Android in iOS 26.3 Beta 1, currently available to developers and public beta testers. Users can find the option by navigating to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Once enabled, users simply place their iPhone next to the new Android device to begin the process.
During setup, users can choose what data they want to move, including contacts, photos, messages and notes. Certain data types, such as Health data, paired accessories and locked notes, are not supported. The connection between devices can be established using either a QR code or a session ID with a pairing code.
Google is also working on a complementary Transfer to iOS feature, allowing Android users to move data to an iPhone using the same side-by-side approach. Together, these tools aim to remove cables, adapters and unnecessary steps from the switching process.
While availability timelines for the stable iOS 26.3 release are still unclear, the update signals a broader shift. Apple appears more willing than before to support cross-platform movement, making it easier for users to change devices without losing important data.
