ChatGPT Christmas Easter Egg Feature: Sam Altman left a single wrapped-gift emoji atop X over the weekend. No caption. No hint. It took hours for users to understand why. Unknown to many, OpenAI casually snuck a fun Easter egg into ChatGPT that turns your selfie into a customised Christmas video message from Santa.
As with last year, there’s no announcement post, no settings toggle and no guide in the app. It simply exists. If you know the trick, it really does. If you cannot wait for it, you will miss all of it.
Here’s precisely how it unfolds.
Step 1: Send a single emoji
Open a new ChatGPT chat and just send one message: 🎁
That’s all. No text. No prompt.
If the feature is enabled on your account, ChatGPT will prompt you to upload a selfie or have one taken with the camera. Some users say emojis such as 🎅 or 🎄 also work, but 🎁 seems to be the most reliable mediator.

If there is nothing to report, don’t overthink it. The feature is a server-side rollout; not everyone has it just yet.
Step 2: Upload your selfie
After you upload a photo, ChatGPT stays silent for a change. Behind the scenes, your image is passed to Sora, OpenAI’s video-generation system.
Processing typically completes in about five minutes but may take longer if the servers are busy. There is no progress bar, just a brief stumble.
Step 3: Santa announces the judgement.
When all is finished, ChatGPT shows off a quick AI-generated Christmas video that has Santa Claus speak to you right in the camera.
Santa reflects on your year, responds to “how you’ve been”, and gives a personalised gift. The tone isn’t fixed. Some people receive warm, effusive praise. Anyone can receive that, along with playful roasting and intentionally horrendous gifts. That risk is part of the appeal.
The personalisation feels like a casual nod to your past ChatGPT usage, but OpenAI never has explained how much history dictates the ultimate outcome.

Step 4: One shot only
Here’s the catch. Otherwise, this appears to be a one-time incident.
Sending 🎁 again in a new chat is usually just replaying the same video. There can be no regeneration, no changing Santa’s mood, no second-try future blueprint — it either will or will not have been. No retries.
It’s all in good seasonal fun, on the face of it. A tiny surprise that you’ll see once, smile at and perhaps share. But the quiet launch, the emoji trigger and the reliance on Sora underpinnings help make it a neat trial of how OpenAI is increasingly combining fun experiments with serious AI plays.
