For the first time ever, Delhi Police is going to use AI-powered smart glasses during the Republic Day celebrations. This is to reinforce and amp up the security measures in the national capital as the celebrations take place. This new tech is equipped with facial recognition software (FRS) and thermal imaging sensors. This will allow real-time identification of suspects without the need to prompt or stop the crowd, an official explained. The smart glasses are indigenously developed by an Indian company and are directly connected to the police database, which gives them access to criminal records and more.

How Does It Work?
The glasses and mobile phones that are issued to officers will work together, said a senior police officer. When a person comes under the scanner, the system collates the data from the database and compares it. A green signal means no criminal history, and red means that the individual has a known record. This would enable the officers to act swiftly if the situation arises and would reduce the need for a manual check in crowded areas, which would also make movement around the area smooth and seamless.
The officials have said that the facial recognition can do the detection and match faces within a matter of seconds and can recognise a person even if their appearance has changed over time. The system uses and compares live images with past records of photographs to efficiently carry out identification.
Apart from the smart glasses, they also come equipped with thermal imaging sensors that are useful in the detection of concealed objects like metal, potential weapons, etc.; this adds another shield of surveillance and security. This will eliminate the need for traditional security procedures that may fall short sometimes, especially in crowded areas.
While speaking to PTI, Additional Commissioner of Police Mahla said, “The glasses are connected to officers’ mobile phones, which carry the complete criminal database. A green box shows no criminal involvement, while a red box indicates a criminal record. The officer can verify the details quickly and take action if necessary.”
Officials said smart glasses will be rolled out to sub-inspectors and field personnel during Republic Day duties. They did not reveal how many devices were bought or their price, adding only that an adequate number has been arranged for the event.

This is definitely a progressive step by the Delhi police in its efforts to combine AI tech with security. Authorities are of the view that this will enhance better crowd management without hindering its flow and ensure speedy and smooth identification of suspects and act swiftly if required and enhance safety during any events like the Republic Day Parade and celebrations.
