What Is Universal Commerce Protocol?

In simple terms, UCP is a framework that lets AI agents manage the entire shopping journey—from searching for a product to checkout, payment, and post-purchase support. Until now, every platform or app had its own system and integrations, which made it tricky for AI to handle tasks consistently. UCP is trying to change that by creating a standard that works across different stores and services.

Who’s Behind It?

Google didn’t do this alone. Big names in retail and e-commerce, including Walmart, Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, and Target, collaborated to create UCP. This means AI agents could soon work reliably across multiple platforms. Brands can also integrate their own AI shopping assistants directly into Google Search, making the process scalable and more trustworthy.

How It Will Work

The first rollout will be in the US through Google Search AI mode and the Gemini app. Users will be able to research products and complete purchases in one go. Payments will be handled through Google Pay, while shipping details come from Google Wallet, with plans to expand to other payment systems later.
