Gemini 3.1 Flash Image: Last year we saw a frenzy of image and video generation tools coming to the fore, and in August of 2025 came the Nano Banana by Google. This model is also known as the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image AI model, which the tech giant claimed during the launch comes with speedy image generation and improvements to character- and element-based image editing. Then came the gradual rollout of Nano Banana Pro in November powered by the Gemini 3 Pro, and this had 4K image generation, claimed by the tech giant as a state-of-the-art (SOTA) editing model. Now Google has dropped another AI image generation tool, the Nano Banana 2.

What Can This New Nano Banana 2 Do?
In a blog post on Thursday, the tech giant dropped the Nano Banana 2 announcement, which has started rolling now. Google is rolling out its latest Gemini 3.1 Flash Image AI model, better known as Nano Banana 2, across several of its products, giving users more places to try it out.
With this update, Nano Banana 2 takes over from Nano Banana Pro within the Gemini 3 lineup, including the Fast, Thinking and Pro models available in the Gemini app. In short, it becomes the new default image model for most users.
That said, Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers aren’t losing access to the older version entirely. They can still use it for more specialised tasks by choosing to regenerate images inside the app when needed. This new Nano Banana 2 is accessible in 141 countries, which includes India, and also comes with eight new languages in search in AI mode and Google Lens through the Google app, phone browsers, and PC browsers. Google claims that this model can be utilised to create banners and campaigns and can also provide suggestions for ads. Nano Banana 2 is now the default image generation model in Flow, Google Labs’ high-fidelity video creation tool. It’s available to all Flow users at no credit cost, making it easier to experiment without limits. The model has also been integrated into Google Ads.
This time the tech giant has claimed that its latest Nano Banana 2 utilises “Gemini's advanced knowledge base” and is also capable of processing images from the web in real time. This makes the tool's processing more enhanced subject-wise, with fast-paced rendering. With this, the user can also create infographics, diagrams, and data visualisations with enhanced levels of detail.

Users will also be able to contextualise and translate text in an image itself, and Google also claims that the tool is capable of rendering photorealistic images at a faster pace, with subject consistency of up to five characters while also maintaining visual accuracy of up to 14 objects in one workflow process. Nano Banana 2 will come with what is being dubbed as "instruction flowing" capabilities. This means it can process much more complex and long-driven queries. Similar to the Nano Banana Pro tool, Nano Banana 2 also has the capabilities to create 4K resolution images with vibrancy in lighting and sharp texture details, Google expressed.
