India’s credit landscape is getting a digital boost. Flex by Google Pay, the tech giant’s latest initiative in partnership with Axis Bank, introduces a co-branded digital credit card fully integrated into the Google Pay app. Built on the RuPay network, Flex merges the familiarity of UPI payments with a flexible line of credit, allowing users to spend, earn rewards, and manage repayments—all without paperwork.
With only around 50 million credit card holders in India, Flex aims to make credit faster and more accessible for millions who currently rely solely on cash or debit payments.
By combining UPI convenience with RuPay credit card benefits, Google Pay has created a unique product that Mastercard and Visa can’t replicate, since their cards cannot be linked to UPI. Bulusu explained that UPI itself enabled this innovation, making instant redemption possible for everyday payments.
Digital Credit at Your Fingertips
Flex is fully digital. Users can apply within minutes, get instant approval, and begin using the card right away. The RuPay-based card is accepted at millions of online and offline merchants, functioning much like a standard UPI transaction.
Key features include:
-Instant rewards: Earn “Stars” on every transaction, each worth Rs 1, redeemable immediately on future purchases.
-Flexible repayments: Pay the full bill or split it into EMIs over six or nine months.
-In-app control: Set transaction limits, block or unblock the card, or reset your PIN directly from the app.
Sharath Bulusu, Senior Director and Product Manager at Google, says the goal is to provide credit that’s simple, fast, and completely under the user’s control.
A Smarter Credit Experience
Flex goes beyond traditional credit cards by integrating spending, rewards, and repayment management into a single platform. By combining UPI’s reach with a digital credit line, the card addresses a key gap in India’s financial system, where most people do not have easy access to credit.
Users can now track spending, redeem rewards instantly, and manage bills—all from their app. This approach eliminates friction, making credit feel more like a natural extension of daily payments rather than a separate, complicated process.

This launch reflects the company’s ongoing push to simplify financial services for everyday users, offering a digital-first solution that combines convenience, rewards, and control in one place.
