OpenAI Sora shutdown news: OpenAI is going to shut down its popular AI video app Sora, it announced on Tuesday. As it plans to shut the app down, it will impact both the mobile app as well as the application programming interface (API). The artificial intelligence giant has not yet revealed the reason for the discontinuation of its Sora app or when the company plans to pull the plug on it. The timing of this announcement is interesting, as this comes at a time when talks about Sora's integration with ChatGPT are on the anvil. The San Francisco-based company assured that more details will be shared in the upcoming days.

OpenAI To Pull The Plug On Sora App
OpenAI appears to be preparing to shut down the Sora app, marking a significant shift for its AI video ambitions. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the official Sora handle confirmed the decision, thanking users who created and shared content on the platform while acknowledging that the update may come as disappointing news. The company added that more clarity on timelines will be shared soon.
At the same time, OpenAI noted that users won’t be left stranded. It plans to roll out options that will allow people to save and preserve the videos they’ve already created before the shutdown takes effect.
It’s worth noting that this move only impacts the Sora app and its API. The underlying AI model that powers Sora, which enables video generation through text prompts and images, is not being discontinued.
As noted above, the timing of this announcement is peculiar, as the tech giant already has plans to integrate Sora with its chatbot. ChatGPT, the report has claimed, is the company's flagship offering, although there is no official confirmation from the company for the same.
OpenAI, in a statement to Decrypt, expressed that the company is shifting focus to “world simulation research to advance robotics.” Adding further, “As we continue to focus on our roadmap to AGI and the compute needed to deliver agentic AI capabilities, we're making the tough decision to discontinue supporting Sora as a consumer app and API offerings.” Although the company has not cited any official reason why it plans to discontinue its video generation app.

This decision from OpenAI also implies that its deal with Disney has come to an end, which came into being in December of 2025. The deal gave OpenAI rights to more than 200 characters and an equity investment of $1 billion, which translates to roughly Rs 8,300 crore. Reports so far claim that there has been no financial transaction between the two entities as of now.
