At a time when gamers are nervously watching hardware prices climb across the tech industry, Sony has delivered a rare piece of good news. Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that PlayStation 5 pricing and availability will remain unchanged through the crucial 2026 holiday season, despite a growing global RAM shortage.

The reassurance came during Sony’s Q3 fiscal earnings call, where Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao addressed concerns around rising component costs. According to Tao, Sony has already secured the minimum memory inventory required to meet demand for the next fiscal year. This move effectively insulates the PS5 from the cost spikes currently affecting much of the electronics market.

Sony’s advantage comes down to early planning. Tao explained that the company locked in large GDDR6 memory supplies well before prices surged, initially as a precaution against potential US tariff increases expected in 2025. That foresight has now placed Sony ahead of rivals. Microsoft is reportedly facing tighter inventory for the Xbox Series X and Series S, while Valve has been forced to rethink parts of its hardware roadmap.

Nintendo appears to be the only other major console maker in a similar position. Company president Shuntaro Furukawa recently indicated that the upcoming Switch 2 is also unlikely to see price increases through 2026.

The broader situation remains tense. The RAM shortage has been driven largely by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, with companies such as OpenAI consuming a significant share of the global DRAM supply. Analysts note that memory costs have risen so sharply that even discounted DDR5 kits now rival the total manufacturing cost of a PS5.

For now, Sony plans to absorb these higher expenses rather than passing them on to consumers. To balance the books, the company is shifting focus toward monetising its existing user base through software sales, PlayStation Plus subscriptions, and high-margin accessories. This approach has already paid off, with strong PlayStation Store performance helping offset softer hardware margins.

Still, Sony has not ruled out future changes. If shortages persist beyond 2026, pricing pressure could emerge in 2027. While negotiations with suppliers are ongoing, Tao acknowledged that long-term uncertainty remains. For the moment, however, the PS5 has avoided a price hike, offering gamers some much-needed relief.
