Samsung S26 Ultra vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Samsung has just dropped the Galaxy S26 Series smartphones, with the Galaxy S26 Ultra as its flagship offering, and with this begins the "Who has the best flagship?" race this year. The devices were unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked 2026, which took place in San Francisco, and with these, the Korean tech giant also released the Galaxy Buds4 series. This time Samsung has introduced a myriad of features and the Galaxy AI suite, but still this time Samsung did not do something drastic when it comes to design changes, and it is still a lot similar to what its predecessor was.
Now that Samsung has revealed its flagship, one thing that everyone is wondering is how does it stack up against Apple's flagship, the iPhone 17 Pro Max? So let's take a detailed view of how both the devices compare. Before we jump to technical details, here are the prices for both the devices: the Galaxy S26 Ultra in India for the topmost 16/1TB variant will cost you Rs 189,999; on the flip side, the iPhone 17 Pro Max for the 1TB variant is currently priced at Rs 189,900. Display, Design And Build
Display-wise, as far as sizes are concerned, both devices have 6.9-inch displays, but the S26 Ultra comes with a QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, whereas the iPhone 17 Pro Max sports an LTPO Super Retina XDR display. But this time Samsung has introduced another feature in its flagship that might interest a lot of buyers, and that is the Privacy Display, which has been perfected at the pixel level. Instead of relying on a simple filter, it combines two types of pixels, some that spread light in multiple directions and others that focus light straight ahead.
When the feature is activated, the focused pixels project light at a 90-degree angle toward the person holding the phone. This significantly narrows the viewing range. So if someone tries to glance at your screen from the side, the content becomes difficult, if not impossible, to read. The iPhone 17 Pro Max does not come with this feature, as this would be the first time it has been introduced in a device. Samsung claims that this is the first time that such a feature has made its way to smartphones. The iPhone, on the other hand, had introduced a less reflective screen. As far as glass protection on the front is concerned, the Galaxy S26 Ultra comes with Corning Gorilla Armour 2, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max has its Ceramic Shield 2.
Samsung is offering the Galaxy S26 Ultra in a fairly wide range of colours but has kept it minimal with subtle colour options. You can pick it up in Cobalt Violet, White, Black, and Sky Blue, while Pink Gold and Silver Shadow are exclusive to online buyers.
Apple, meanwhile, has gone with bolder finishes and vibrant colours for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, including Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue, and Silver. One more thing to note is Apple has also gone through one of its most drastic design changes yet with the back-camera panel.
In terms of extras, the Galaxy S26 Ultra continues to bundle the S Pen, which remains one of its standout features. The iPhone 17 Pro Max takes a different approach, adding dedicated camera control and action buttons that let you trigger specific functions with a single press.
Processor, Storage And Battery Life
Samsung has used the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 silicon, the highest variant of which comes paired with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage; it also has a 12/512 GB and a 12/512 GB version. Alongside Samsung has also amped up the cooling with its redesigned vapour cooling chamber, something that can be found in more gamer-centric devices. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has its A19 Pro chip, which is much more efficient than its predecessor, the A18 Pro chip. The A19 Pro chip is paired with neural accelerators specifically designed to handle heavy AI workloads. When it comes to storage variants, Apple here is ahead and gives a 2TB option as well, along with 256GB, 512GB and 1TB variants.
As far as new AI features are concerned, Samsung has introduced the Galaxy AI suite, and it will be integrated throughout the Galaxy ecosystem. Apart from that, Samsung has also upgraded its Bixby assistant, which is more conversational and context-friendly now. Apple has its Siri, an enhanced version of which is still awaited. The Galaxy S25 Ultra packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for 60W charging. On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Pro Max houses a slightly larger 5,088mAh cell. Apple doesn’t officially disclose its exact charging wattage, though.
Camera Details
The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra sticks closely to the formula we’ve seen before, at least on paper. It features a quad-camera setup led by a 200-megapixel primary sensor with a brighter f/1.4 aperture, improved from f/1.7. There’s also a 50-megapixel 5x telephoto lens with a wider f/2.9 aperture, a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto camera at f/2.4, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens with an f/1.9 aperture. Up front, you get a 12-megapixel selfie camera that now offers a wider 85-degree field of view.
Samsung claims that the larger apertures on two of the rear cameras should translate into better low-light photos and videos. That sounds promising, but we’ll reserve judgement until we’ve had a chance to test it properly.
On Apple’s side, the iPhone 17 Pro Max keeps things streamlined with three 48-megapixel cameras. The setup includes a main sensor, an ultrawide lens, and a 4x telephoto camera. Apple also says the telephoto lens can capture stabilised video at up to 8x zoom, which could be a big plus for users who shoot from a distance.

So when kept side by side, both devices come with their own advantages, and it all ultimately depends on your use case, while Samsung comes with the latest in-line tech for Android, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max comes with its set of in-house, completely integrated ecosystems for a seamless user interface. Here one thing to note is that Apple has a 2TB variant as well, but it costs Rs 229900. So if you are an Android fan or planning to switch ecosystems the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is one of the best offerings out there, but if you want an ecosystem that is seamless and lag free then iPhone 17 Pro Max would be the one to choose.
