List of school holidays in December 2024: As December begins, North India experiences mild cold, while parts of South India face heavy rainfall. Schools, which saw closures in November for Diwali, Chhath Puja, and other festivals, will continue to have holidays this month.
In North India, schools will close for winter vacations later this month. Moreover, all educational institutions will observe a holiday on Christmas, December 25, 2024. Winter vacations usually begin in late December or early January, depending on the weather, with most states observing a break from January 1 to 14. The timing of these vacations is decided by district officials based on local weather conditions.
States like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh are among those where schools will likely close by the last week of December.
In South India, heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Fengal have led to school closures in some districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry in early December. A red alert has been issued in eight Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Mayiladuthurai.
December will see four Saturdays and five Sundays, offering ample weekend breaks for students. Many schools remain closed on all Saturdays and Sundays, while others observe holidays on the second and last Saturdays.
Schools across the country will also close on December 25 for Christmas celebrations. By this time, winter vacations will already have started in several North Indian states. Institutions that remain open during this period will still observe a holiday on Christmas Day.
In November, rising pollution levels in Delhi-NCR forced schools to shut down for a week. With winter now settling in, students in the region can expect an announcement regarding winter vacations soon.
