AIIMS Gorakhpur is preparing to request approval from the Ministry of Health to allow international doctors to pursue the DM course in Pain Medicine at the institute. The proposal was prompted after pain specialists from six countries, who were in the city to attend the AIIMS Gorakhpur Pain Update 1.0, expressed interest in joining the programme. Executive Director Major General (Retd) Dr Vibha Dutta assured them that she would write to the ministry for guidance.

If approved, AIIMS Gorakhpur would become the second institute, after AIIMS Delhi, to offer the course to international medical professionals.

Currently, AIIMS Gorakhpur has one DM seat in Pain Medicine, and the first trainee is set to complete the two-year programme soon. Nationwide, the course is available only at AIIMS Rishikesh and AIIMS Mangalagiri within the AIIMS network.

Dr Anurag Agarwal, National Secretary of the Indian Society for the Study of Pain (ISSP), highlighted the importance of international admissions, stating it would enable valuable knowledge and cultural exchange, while boosting the institute’s global standing. He added that 3,700 pain physicians in India are currently dedicated to advancing pain-relief treatments.

AIIMS Gorakhpur uses Minimally Invasive Pain and Spine Intervention (MIPSI) techniques, aimed at treating conditions like slipped disc and sciatica without surgery, enabling quicker recovery for patients.

“This will be a matter of pride for AIIMS Gorakhpur. We will pursue the proposal and write to the ministry,” said Dr Vibha Dutta.
