Despite the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation’s claim of making the city bin-free, piles of garbage continue to trouble residents in several areas. Accumulation of waste has been reported in many localities, including Betiahata ward near the residence of Bhagwati Prasad Dubey and near the mosque in Bandhu Singh Nagar.
According to residents, sanitation workers collect garbage from nearby colonies and temporarily dump it at a single spot, from where it is lifted for final disposal either the same day or after one or two days. During this period, the garbage heap remains exposed, causing foul odour and unhygienic conditions in the surrounding areas.

The Municipal Corporation has implemented a door-to-door garbage collection system under which waste is collected from households and transported to designated disposal sites. However, civic officials said that many residents continue to throw garbage on roadsides instead of waiting for the collection vehicles, leading to repeated accumulation of waste in neighbourhoods.
To address the issue permanently, the Municipal Corporation has started identifying locations where garbage frequently accumulates. Semi-underground bins will be constructed at such spots, and a tender for the project has already been issued. Officials said these bins will ensure that waste is not visible on the streets and will help create a more organised sanitation system.
At present, 10 semi-underground bins are operational in the city. Additional sites with recurring complaints of garbage dumping are being prioritised for the construction of more bins.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Pramod Kumar appealed to residents to cooperate with the door-to-door garbage collection system and avoid dumping waste on streets to help keep the city clean and hygienic.
