Taking a major stride towards strengthening high-level technical education and innovation, the administration of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University has initiated the process of establishing a state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) laboratory. The facility will be developed at an approximate cost of Rs 1.5 crore.

Funding And Strategic Planning

The project is being funded under the PM-USHA scheme.

Budget Allocation: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned a total of Rs 100 crore to the university under the PM-USHA fund. Of this, Rs 3 crore is allocated under the "soft component" specifically for students' skill development. The AI lab will be established using funds from this specific allocation.

Preparation: A dedicated team has been formed to prepare the blueprint for the laboratory. As part of the planning process, the university team recently visited NIELIT Deemed University to study their facilities and gather technical insights.

Advanced Infrastructure And Capabilities

The new laboratory aims to provide world-class technical facilities to give a new direction to organised research and innovation. Key technical features include:

Centralised Server: The lab will feature a high-capacity centralised GPU server, which will serve as the backbone for large-scale AI model training, deep learning and complex data analysis.

Workstations: It will be equipped with 7 to 11 GPU-based AI workstations, significantly boosting the university's computing infrastructure.

Academic Impact And Future Vision

The establishment of this lab is expected to initiate high-level, organized research work at the university.

Student Benefits: The facility will directly benefit students enrolled in existing courses such as B.Tech (AI) and MS (AI).

Centre of Excellence: The laboratory is envisioned to evolve into a Centre of Excellence in the future. This transformation aims to position the university as a major hub for technical education, research, and innovation in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Vice-Chancellor of Gorakhpur University Prof. Poonam Tandon said, "The AI lab will be established from the budget sanctioned under the PM-USHA scheme. This laboratory will be developed as a Centre of Excellence in the future. This will enable the university to become a major centre for technical education, research, and innovation in eastern Uttar Pradesh. This will be a great achievement for the university's students."
