A powerful martial spirit, set to the stirring tunes of a military band, filled the air during a foundation stone laying ceremony for the beautification of the Gorkha War Memorial and the construction of a new museum. The event, held at the Gorkha Recruitment Depot (GRD) in Gorakhpur, celebrated the legendary bravery of Gorkha soldiers.
After laying the foundation stone, India's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Anil Chauhan, electrified the atmosphere by chanting the Gorkha Regiment's famous war cry: "Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali!". The powerful chant, a symbol of the Gorkhas' indomitable courage, filled everyone present with deep respect for the brave soldiers and fallen heroes.
Strengthening A Historic Bond
In his address, the CDS expressed confidence that this project would mark a "new chapter" in the relationship between Gorakhpur (the land where the revered sage Guru Gorakhnath practiced penance) and the Gorkha district in Nepal (his final resting place).
Highlighting his personal connection of 44 years with the Gorkha Regiment, he proudly shared his experiences. The CDS stated his belief that this new memorial and museum will keep the tales of valor alive and serve as a powerful source of inspiration for future generations.
"Either Lying Or A Gorkha"
A moving moment during the ceremony was the screening of a video clip from the film 'Sam Bahadur'. The iconic words of India’s legendary Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw resonated through the venue: "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or he is a Gorkha." This famous tribute to the exceptional bravery of Gorkha soldiers filled the entire audience with immense pride.
A Shared Spiritual Heritage
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath explained the deep-rooted spiritual connection between the Gorkhas and Guru Gorakhnath. He noted that both revere Goddess Kali (Maa Kali) as their principal deity. "That is why," the CM explained, "wherever you find a temple of Guru Gorakhnath, you will certainly find a temple for Maa Kali as well."
Following the ceremony, the CM and the CDS visited the regimental temple to offer prayers to Goddess Kali and pay solemn homage to the immortal martyred Gorkha soldiers.
