A pilgrimage to the Pashupatinath temple in Nepal brought a tragic end for a couple from Ghaziabad. During a riot in Kathmandu, a 55-year-old woman died in a hotel fire, while her husband was seriously injured.

Ramveer Singh Gola, a resident of Master Colony in Ghaziabad, had gone to Kathmandu on September 7 with his 55-year-old wife, Rajesh Gola. After visiting the Pashupatinath temple, they were staying at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Kathmandu.

Around 11:30 late at night, rioters set the hotel on fire. When the hotel was engulfed in flames, the couple made a desperate attempt to save their lives by jumping from the fourth floor. Many people were saved by landing on mattresses placed below by a rescue team, but both of them were injured. In the meantime, the rioters attacked again, and in the chaos that followed, the couple got separated.

On Wednesday, Ramveer Singh's son, Vishal, received a phone call from Nepal giving him the sad news that his mother, Rajesh Gola, had died during treatment. Meanwhile, Ramveer Singh Gola, who was caught in the riot, was found injured in a relief camp two days later.

Women's mortal remains were brought through the Sonauli border in Maharajganj to her home in Ghaziabad on Thursday, where the last rites will be performed on Friday.

Recalling the horrific events of September 9, the deceased's elder son, Vishal, told TOI, "Everything was perfectly fine just hours before the attack. My parents were so happy after visiting the Pashupatinath temple; they even gave us a video call to show us the sights of Kathmandu. But that night, a violent mob suddenly attacked the hotel and set it on fire."

He described their desperate attempt to escape from the fourth floor. "My father broke a window, tied bedsheets together, and jumped onto a mattress they had thrown down. My mother slipped while trying to follow him and fell on her back, sustaining severe injuries," he said.

Vishal alleged that a complete communication breakdown made it impossible to locate his parents. "For two days, we had no news about them at all. We eventually found my father in a relief camp, only to learn that my mother had died in the hospital," he stated. "We received very little help from the Indian Embassy, and the local rescue teams arrived far too late."
