The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has issued notices to schools that have failed to cooperate despite orders regarding relief from traffic jams outside their premises. This order was passed by a division bench of Justice Alok Mathur and Justice Brij Raj Singh while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in 2020 by the Gomti River Bank Residents. The next hearing in this matter will be on January 19.

Principals Summoned And Specific Schools Named

The court has also asked the principals and administrative officers of the schools to appear and state what measures they have taken to alleviate the traffic congestion. The notice directs the principals and administrative officers of La Martiniere Girls' College, Hazratganj; Loreto Convent, Gautampalli; City Montessori School, Vishal Khand; City Montessori School, Gomti Nagar Extension; City Montessori School, Station Road; and Seth MR Jaipuria School, Gomti Nagar, to appear in court. All these schools have been asked what steps they have taken to improve traffic management around their premises.

Non-Compliance And Court Warnings

The amicus curiae informed the court that institutions not complying with the directives of the authorities or the amicus curiae should be made a party to the case and be heard. The court was informed about the aforementioned six schools that are not complying with the directives. The court also clarified that the institutions are being given an opportunity to improve the traffic situation themselves and to offer suggestions; if they fail to do so, the court will pass necessary directives.

Background Of The Petition

The aforementioned petition specifically raises the issue of schools operating in residential areas of the city. In this regard, the court has issued guidelines to officials and school managements in previous hearings.
