The decision to close markets to vehicular traffic from October 15, in anticipation of festive crowds before Diwali and Dhanteras, has been deferred for now in Meerut. According to traffic officials, traders have not yet requested route diversions, and the current situation does not necessitate such measures.

Traffic Police Superintendent Raghavendra Mishra stated that the markets are not yet witnessing heavy footfall, making immediate diversions and vehicle bans unnecessary. However, markets will now be closed to vehicles starting October 17, a day before Dhanteras, when larger crowds are expected.

Additional traffic police personnel have been deployed in and around major markets and connecting intersections. Entry of four-wheelers and e-rickshaws into market areas will be prohibited before Diwali as part of public safety measures.

Three days earlier, the traffic police had announced a vehicle ban in market areas from October 15 and restrictions on heavy vehicle movement. However, the plan has now been revised.

Meanwhile, restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles and buses will be enforced on Begumpul-Hapur Road after festive decorations and gates are installed. Mishra explained that these installations could be damaged by heavy traffic, and traders have requested a ban on such vehicles once the decorations are in place.

He further added that from October 17, ‘No Entry’ timings in the city will be revised to ensure smooth movement and safety for the public during the festive season.
