Noida traffic police have begun penalising vehicle owners, who display religion and caste stickers on their vehicles, on the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

According to senior officers carrying out the drive, displaying such stickers and symbols on vehicles could distract drivers as well as cause law and order problems.

The police began the initiative on August 11 after receiving orders from Lucknow to penalise people who displayed caste and religion stickers, used tinted films on car windows, or drove without a license.

Prashant Kumar, UP's special DG (law and order), said officers across the state have been directed to conduct sweeps and take action against vehicles bearing such stickers.

According to the Motor Vehicles Act, no sticker/message or anything else could be written or put anywhere on a car or two-wheeler, including the registration plate, according to GS Chauhan, an advocate of the Lucknow High Court.

The use of caste and religion-specific stickers and writings on vehicles is prohibited by Section 179 (1) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

According to the law, “whoever wilfully disobeys any direction lawfully given by any person or authority empowered under this Act to give such direction, or obstructs any person or authority in the discharge of any functions which such person or authority is required or empowered under this Act to discharge, shall, if no other penalty is provided for the offence be punishable with fine which may extend to five hundred rupees”.
